Strengthening Partnerships in Samoa 🇼🇸

#SWAG had the pleasure of welcoming the Governor General of Australia, HE Sam Mostyn, and her delegation today. Along with Civil Society Organisations partnering with the Tautua Human Development Program, SWAG shared its mission and vision for economic empowerment of women through current projects. The event provided an important opportunity for local organisations to showcase their work, achievements, and priorities in advancing sustainable and inclusive development in Samoa.

SWAG was represented by Vice President and Secretary of Executive Board, to share projects like #Siamufest which provides training in value-added products to create necessary income for women in rural spaces combined with on-line marketing and branding, while promoting natural farming techniques and biodegradable/recyclable packaging through support provided under the Tautua Program.

Governor General Mostyn highlighted a "care for country" approach to environmental practices and emphasized the importance of listening to women experiencing the greatest vulnerabilities. This means consulting directly with women in remote, isolated, and rural settings to understand their localized barriers and finding solutions that work for them.❤️👏

#SWAG was greatful for the engagement of HE Will Robinson and DFAT Samoa team in order to share our passion for supporting women #growers in Samoa through meaningful and lasting interventions ❤️🇼🇸🌱

We thank the Government of Australia for its continued partnership and commitment to gender equality and inclusive development. ❤️🇦🇺♀️

We loved being at the launch of, Taste of Samoa Reimagined - and what a joy it was to experience a tasting menu inspired by products created by our local women farmers, growers and food entrepreneurs - from honey and vi chutney to pickles, jams and preserves, creatively reimagined by the Sheraton culinary team.

The initiative brings together @swagsamoa, @sheratonsamoahotel, @pacificislandfoodrev, @theasiafoundation and Indonesia’s @javaraindonesia opening up exciting possibilities for our local produce within gastronomy, hospitality and tourism.

Great people, beautiful food and an exciting taste of what’s possible when we celebrate what is grown and created right here in Samoa. 🇼🇸🌺

Shore to Table & Our Future is Now | Building Skills, Growing Communities 🌴🌊 🧑🏾‍🌾👩🏽‍🏫

This week, the Samoa Women’s Association of Growers (SWAG) continued its mission to support the empowerment of women in agriculture as program facilitators held a hands-on skills development workshop in Matautu, Lefaga as part of the Shore to Table (S2T) and Our Future is Now (OFIN) projects.

Incorporating both projects in a combined learning experience, facilitators provided demonstrations in both organic fertiliser and composting creation. Through these demonstrations, members of the Matautu Women’s Committee gained greater awareness of sustainable farming practices and economic opportunities in agriculture.

Shore to Table - Participants took part in a live demonstration of how to process locally collected seaweed into organic fertiliser. The creation of the fertiliser provides an alternative to expensive imported products and can be used in subsistence farming or sold commercially to support household incomes.

Our Future is Now - Utilising specialised composting equipment, participants were shown how to transform household and green waste into rich compost for home gardens and small-scale farming, building healthier soil and greater food security.

“Today I learnt a lot about seaweed and composting and how these can both be used to help my family’s gardens and farm,” said program participant, Salamasina Ailima. “These skills will be very useful for creating better soil and helping us produce better crops in our gardens.”

The workshop concluded with the handover of composting equipment and gardening tools to support the participants in putting their new skills into immediate practice within their homes and community.

Through both the S2T and OFIN projects, SWAG's continues its commitment to the economic empowerment of rural women through sustainable agriculture, organic innovation, and community-led environmental stewardship.

SWAG’s OFIN Project is pleased to be supported by the European Union. The S2T Project is funded by DFAT Australia and implemented by SPC Women Lead.

#SWAG would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Tuiatafu Nusi Moa Maualaivao of Koko Moni. He was a founding member of SWAG, a long established expert in cacao and soil science, and a great promoter of making agriculture accessible for everyone. Tuiatafu designed the now signature #atolauniu which were provided at SWAG markets to discourage the use of plastic bags and to remind all of the pride we should have in the ingenuity of Samoan traditional weaving skills. A regular at the SWAG Saturday Market, he will be remembered for his delicious #SalakiFala, #Kokosamoa, #Kofe, Honey, and organic produce. Manuia lau malaga dear Nusi❤️ by @swagsamoa
