Europe Day 14 | British lighting

As you know, I’m obsessed with finding unique furniture, lighting and art, which is pretty much why I’ve ended up on this trip through Paris and London for Design week. More on Venice later.

During London Design Week, I spent a day wandering around Belgravia visiting some incredible British lighting studios. Loved the sophisticated glass and metalwork at Ochre, and the luminous, organic forms at PINCH. Can you believe they’re made from fibres from the banana family?

Then there was the magnificent sculptural wrought iron and glass works at Cox London, and the sculptural lighting at Charles Burnand Gallery. Each studio with its own distinct style, but the craftsmanship and attention to detail across all of them was extraordinary.

Days 12–13 | English country style

At Charleston, the country home of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, the Bloomsbury Group’s ideas feel wonderfully lived in. Walls, doors and furniture became canvases; colour and pattern moved freely from painting into everyday life. Virginia Woolf came here to visit her sister Vanessa, along with the other artists and writers who gathered around them.

I kept noticing the florals, painted, printed and growing in the garden, and how beautifully they sit beside bolder shapes and unexpected colour.

Then on to Rye: cobbled streets, crooked houses and a visit to Merchant & Mills to lose myself in linen. So many gorgeous shades, especially the chartreuse. A couple of days spent thinking about the particular magic of English pattern and the pleasure of a home that feels made by hand.

Days 9–11 | The English Garden

Exploring Sissinghurst, home of Vita Sackville-West, and Great Dixter—layered with meadow planting full of height, colour and flowers. Towering borders create garden rooms and beautifully frame the views.

We learnt that the width of historic great halls was dictated by the longest timber beam available. Sustainable gardening, farm shops, nurseries and drives through Peter Rabbit country.

London Design Festival — Brompton Design District

Two days exploring exhibitions, galleries and hidden spaces across Brompton, including the V&A.

Exhibitions highlights include Perfectly Imperfect. Also loved the playful One Tool, One Stool exhibition by Royal College of Art students and Rafael Prieto’s beautifully curated installation.

So much colour, raw materiality, inventive craftsmanship and fresh thinking.

London — Shoreditch Design Week

A full day of design, discoveries and a little London fun around Shoreditch for @londondesignfestival ✨

Starting at @materialmatters, diving into sustainability, experimentation and the future of materials, then wandering through House of ICON, WAX and some of Shoreditch’s brilliant independent showrooms.

One of the highlights? Meeting the legendary Lee Broom and getting a first look at his new collection.

I was also lucky enough to join a tour of the Lindon Interior Design Council led by Duncan @unit.d__ Director of @shoreditchdesignweek, getting an insider’s view of the people, ideas and spaces shaping this creative neighbourhood.

Design, new ideas, great people and plenty of inspiration — Shoreditch definitely delivered. 🚀

Paris — Material Exploration

Highlights included the beautiful fibre craftsmanship of @ohmylaine_bylainamac Anthony Guerrée’s Contrepoint at Musée Bourdelle @anthonyguerree @museebourdelle @parisdesignweek

Three Factory exhibitions followed, filled with experimental works exploring timber, ceramics, textiles, lighting and unexpected material combinations—before a Swedish design event and dinner at Joli. So much fun hanging out with @t.ravers @austapestry for our Paris adventures.

And you can’t leave Paris without visiting a flea market, always a treasure hunt for unusual objects and inspiration.

Paris — French Savoir-Faire

Today was all about French savoir-faire—that instinctive flair for bringing together furniture, art and objects with confidence, character and soul.

A highlight was visiting the beautiful showroom of @emma.donnersberg, followed by the incredible design studios along Rue de Lille—mid-century treasures at @arrogantverneuil, sculptural lighting, extraordinary ceramics and the richly layered world of @lauragonzalezofficiel.

This art of mixing periods, styles and unexpected pieces is central to the uniqueness of Swee Design. I travel to source pieces that aren’t seen everywhere, but it’s about so much more than sourcing. It’s the conversations and connections with designers, artists, gallerists and curators that give each piece a story and bring another layer to an interior.

The French have such an innate understanding of how to mix and match. You see it in their interiors and in the effortless way French women dress. Nothing feels overly coordinated, yet somehow it all works beautifully.

Paris — Rive Gauche

A full day exploring Paris Design Week across the Rive Gauche—beautiful galleries, hidden courtyards and design discoveries at every turn.

Starting at the Finnish Institute, then moving through an eclectic mix of exhibitions, furniture, lighting, art and objects. Highlights included catching up with the talented designers at @corpus.studio, discovering the @cctapis collaboration with @fornasetti, visiting the colour-saturated @indiamahdavi showroom and seeing Le Grand Bouquet, the monumental floral installation by @uchronia_world at @grand__palais.

The evening continued with exhibition openings, drinks and more design conversations. Paris really does know how to turn an entire city into a celebration of creativity.

Three days in and my camera roll is already completely out of control.

Paris — Maison&Objet

A thrilling start to Paris Design Week with my first visit to the iconic @maisonetobjet.

I made my way through four enormous halls filled with thousands of international suppliers—there was so much to see, from beautiful ceramics, coloured glass and sculptural timber pieces to lighting, furniture, textiles, accessories and unexpected statement designs.

The standout was the strong focus on materiality, with tactile finishes and inventive uses of stone, wood, metal, glass and fabric everywhere I looked. Memorable moments include the crazy eccentric polar bear chairs!

It was especially exciting to discover the work of emerging designers and the rising stars shaping the future of design.

In the evening, it was back into Paris for drinks and a whirlwind of Design Week openings. A very full—and very inspiring—Day 2. by @sweedesign

EUROPE / DAY 01 OF 23
Paris — Le Marais 🇫🇷

Follow along on my European adventure as I source unique furniture, art and objects.

First stop: Doha Airport, where even the public art is supersized. Then on to Paris and the beautiful Marais, where I’m staying in the most gorgeous apartment. I feel like Virginia Woolf in A Room of One’s Own—and that view!

The South Korean president’s visit brought road closures and police in ceremonial finery.

Day-one purchase: a Kelly Wearstler lamp, which will now be travelling as my hand luggage for the next three weeks. Call me crazy, but I’m next-level when it comes to sourcing.

Hanging out with my Paris buddy @t.ravers and wondering why absolutely everything here looks so insanely stylish and chic.

Wonderful to hear the residency talk by @desiremohebzandi with @sophieprince at @austapestry @t.ravers

It was inspiring to see the stunning textile and woven works created during her residency. A beautiful example of how international design talent, traditional craftsmanship, and contemporary practice can come together to create something exceptional.
