The White Belt Truth
What nobody tells you about your first year of jiu-jitsu

POSTS STORIES REELS

You can’t bench press a grown adult off you. Neither can I. Here’s what to do instead:

1. Breathe first. Your first job isn’t to escape. It’s to breathe.
2. Frame. Forearms and hands brace on hips and neck. Frames aren’t for pushing someone off. They make space so you can breathe and move.
3. Elbows in. Tight to your sides under side control and mount.
4. Bridge, then shrimp. Move yourself, not them.
5. Be patient. Wait for them to shift their weight. That’s your moment.
6. Turn your face if their shoulder is on it. Small adjustments matter.

Your instructor will show you the details. This is the mindset. Save it.

Pinned, face covered, breathing restricted. For some people that triggers real claustrophobic panic.

That reaction is completely human. It’s not weakness. It’s your nervous system doing exactly what it was built to do. The problem is that on the mat, the panic makes things worse: straight arms, giving up your back, burning everything in one frantic minute.

So if it’s too much, tap. Reset. Then, over months, you rewire your brain: this isn’t life or death. I can breathe. I can think.

Getting comfortable being uncomfortable takes time. That’s okay.

"And instead of panicking, you'll breathe. You'll frame. You'll wait." 🥋

Every new grappler hits it in the first few weeks: someone heavy settles into side control, a shoulder lands on your jaw, and a little alarm in your head starts yelling to get out. Thrashing feels right and makes it worse. The fix isn't a secret escape. It's staying calm long enough to make a little space, then a little more. Months later you'll notice it happening off the mat too. The White Belt Truth walks you through those first rough weeks under pressure. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.

White belt myth #3: the bigger, stronger person wins.

We grow up believing it. And then a smaller person with a couple years of training wraps us up like a gift.

Technique, timing, and experience matter enormously. That’s not a fluke. It’s the whole reason this art exists.

Bigger folks: this is the hardest pill to swallow in year one. Swallow it early. It makes everything else easier.

If your only measure of success is “Did I tap someone?” you’re going to be disappointed most days of your first year.

So measure other things:
• Did you survive longer than last time?
• Did you escape a position, even once?
• Did you stay calm under side control?
• Did you try the technique from class, even if it didn’t work?
• Did you see a submission coming?
• Did you breathe?
• Did you show up, even though you didn’t feel like it?

Those count. Which one did you get this week? 👇

I know you love training. I know you don’t want to miss class.

But jiu-jitsu is the ultimate close-contact sport. Cold, flu, fever, stomach bug, anything weird on your skin: stay home. Get it checked. Come back when you’re cleared.

And if you do catch something, tell your instructor, even if it’s embarrassing. Skin infections happen to grapplers. Hiding it is what’s not okay.

A clean room is a sign of a healthy culture.

"You don't need to be ready. Nobody is ready. You just need to come back." 🥋

The hardest class isn't the first one. It's the second. You wake up sore, replay every awkward moment, and start telling yourself you'll start next month when you're in better shape. Don't wait for that version of you. Pick your next class before you leave the building and show up for it. It gets a little less scary every single time. The White Belt Truth is the first-year guide for anyone standing in that parking lot. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.

"You trust these people with your body. And they trust you with theirs." 🥋

Your first week, being that close to strangers feels strange. Somebody's knee in your armpit, their sweat on your shirt. Then one day you notice the person on top of you isn't a stranger anymore. They're a training partner, and you've each been keeping the other safe the whole time. That trust is the part of jiu-jitsu nobody warns you about. The White Belt Truth covers it. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.

"And then class starts. And for the next hour, none of that exists." 🥋

Work, bills, the to-do list in your head. You bring all of it through the door. Then someone's trying to pass your guard and there's simply no space left to worry. You walk out soaked, and somehow everything feels lighter. The White Belt Truth is about the hour on the mat that resets the rest of your day. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.

"You know you're going to be tired. You know you're going to get smashed. You know you're going to lose. And you go anyway." 🥋

Most of modern life is built to keep us comfortable. Jiu-jitsu is the hour you walk straight into the hard thing on purpose, knowing exactly how it ends, and you lace up anyway. That choice, made over and over, is what changes you. The White Belt Truth by Itsu is for everyone who keeps choosing it. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.

You come home with a red stripe on your neck and a handprint on your arm, and your family looks at you like you joined a fight club.

The book’s official list of explanations:
“Mat burn.”
“Somebody’s knee.”
“I genuinely don’t know, but it’s fine.”

What’s yours? Best answer gets pinned. 👇

(Real talk: if a scrape gets red, hot, swollen, or starts oozing, that’s not mat burn anymore. Get it looked at.)

"Don't wait for the pain. Tap when you recognize you're caught." 🥋

There's no trophy for surviving an armbar you already lost. Tapping early isn't quitting, it's how you stay healthy enough to come back tomorrow and the day after that. The White Belt Truth by Itsu covers the stuff nobody explains on day one. Kindle & paperback on Amazon. Link in bio.
