If I can be vulnerable for just a second; as September comes to a close, I wanted to acknowledge the month’s new meaning to me. September is Thyroid Cancer Awareness month. A little over a month ago, August 13th to be exact, I was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer. If you would have told me 2026 would be the year I am diagnosed with Cancer, I would have never believed you. You never think it could happen to you, until the day comes and it actually is you on the other end of the phone with the doctor listening to the words β€œI’m so sorry to tell you that it is cancer.” However I want to make something clear: I am not and will never be a victim of this disease. I am so incredibly grateful to my primary doctor; not only did she listen to my concerns, she did not dismiss them even though all signs pointed to a different outcome. As a woman, and now more than ever, it is so incredibly important to not only listen to your body and your intuition, but to also speak up for yourself. No one knows your body like you, and if you feel something is wrong, please don’t ever be afraid to speak up and keep speaking up to advocate for yourself. If I would have never spoken up, I would have never gotten an ultra sound; and it was because of that ultra sound they were able to find not only the cancer in my thyroid, but the metastatic cancer that had spread to my nearby lymph nodes. No where else was the cancer visible; my labs were normal, my thyroid was still functioning normally, I had no physical symptoms, and my white blood cell count was normal. Fortunately, we were able to catch it early and act fast. So fast that two weeks and a day after I was diagnosed, I was in surgery for a total thyroidectomy and removal of 27 lymph nodes (yes you read that right πŸ˜…) in my left neck. Physically, recovery has been what I expected; some soreness and fatigue but nothing I can’t handle. Mentally, it depends on the day. There’s days where I wake up and I feel like myself; I’m not bothered by my scar and I feel almost normal again. Other days, the littlest thing can trigger an emotional response.
