Chicago will forever be one the best places to play music and be in a band. To this day, there’s still a built-in ecosystem where a band can find their tribe initially via DIY shows in the city and out in the suburbs and then grow together as the audiences warrant bigger/“proper” venues back in the city. Many of the headliners of the latter tend to have known and played with each other for at least a few decades at this point. It’s tight-knit, but certainly welcoming.

SWEET COBRA was probably the first proper Chicago band that we worked with back in the Magic Bullet days. When “Earth” delivered, I fondly recall freaking the fuck out because I couldn’t progress past “Far Too Temp” (the first song on the album). I just kept rewinding and repeating the song over and over. To this day, it’s one of my favorite songs, period. “Threes” (2022) is their most recent offering and the band wisely stayed the course with co-producers Kurt Ballou and Matt Talbot. The newest stuff remains heavy and absurdly melodic, which is always what makes/made the band shine above and beyond.

Obviously, when it comes to Chicago, you can’t gloss past the prolific and diversified output of the group of friends that comprise Pelican, as each member tends to create and collaborate across multiple projects like nothing:

RLYR is a band that Trevor Shelley de Brauw does with Colin DeKuiper and Steven Hess. Instrumental rock-oriented, it’s got a bit more tempo and articulation than some of their other projects or what your mind’s ears might presume within that broad, sweeping genre... but it retains the RIFF ADHERENCE that Trevor’s now signature guitar playing is known for. For the attention-calibrated listener, there is even a 23 minute song called “Descent of the Night Bison” that closes out “Delayer!”

Big time flashback from around the time we recorded “Forever” when Matt first joined us on second guitar. Shot at the Needle House where we practiced and skated, and where some legendary shows happened. Bart heard us practicing and was like “Let me take a photo of you guys.” Photo by @bartjones
