It was never about track; it was always about preparing for life.

The phrase, “I can show you better than I can tell you,” never loses its relevance. Its simple message hides its true impact: you learn more from experience.

Baby boy finished 2nd grade strong despite some early hiccups—just the usual—impulsive behavior, big feelings, and plenty of “wiggles” during class. Mom and Dad are grateful for a patient teacher.

We collaborated with his (very awesome) teacher to tailor his 504 plan. At home, we adjusted his routine and organizational skills, especially by using the @myskylight—it worked wonders. But Joseph deserves all the credit because he did the work and finished his race.

Playing sports helps.

Every day, JoJo has something to do. Some days, he trains with his speed coach at @coachplez . Other days, he’s running 10 400s with Coach Nickie. Sometimes, he works out and then heads to track practice. But this isn’t just about pushing him to be the fastest 8-year-old.

Pride. Effort. Confidence.

This is what we want for baby boy. When you take pride in yourself or your team, you put forth your best effort to maintain your confidence, no matter what obstacles you face.

The efforts between the start and finish determine how you end up: Some meets, you might stumble out of the blocks — keep going. On other days, you might fail a math test — keep trying. How you respond during the “in-between” moments is what makes the difference.

In the end, all these experiences are beneficial. Their differences and how you react to them are invaluable.

As always, mommy and daddy love you. Thank you for your pride, your effort, and your confidence. You finished.

On to the next race.

It began at Atlas Brewworks. The @beardfoundation Awards, published articles with @Eater , @Huckberry , @ebonymagazine and @GoodbeerHunting (pardon my flex) followed later. I owe most of my (literary) accomplishments to my time spent behind the bar, slangin’ pints.

I completed a 2016 summer beer “internship” with @sincerely.shep and was searching for a landing spot. That summer afforded me a wealth of beer experiences and I wanted to build on it. A short 10 minute interview with @dcbeergoddess aka “Mumbles” allowed me to put my beer knowledge to use.

It was just a side-gig. A decade later, most of my friends worked or frequented @atlasbrewworks. This place was more than a brewery. It was another home.

I moved to DC in 2007. I didn’t have family here. I didn’t have friends here—except for my dawg, @sincerely.shep . I had to take many chances and step out on faith.

Those chances and faithful steps included trusting people I’d never met. Thank God I did.

My family wouldn’t be as big as it is now.
Thank you Atlas (Ivy City). Gonna hate to see you shut those doors, but thank you for my folks. by @runjosatchrun
