🎂 Life is a can of cake.

Never thought I’d be craving a cake that looks like it came straight out of a prepper’s bunker — sealed in aluminum, the kind of thing you’d expect to find stacked in a Silicon Valley millionaire’s underground pantry. Thanks to @helneportier, I discovered this French delicacy from Provence, and honestly? I’m obsessed.

Since being diagnosed with celiac disease, my relationship with food has shifted. Labels became maps, restaurants turned into rare refuges, and choices narrowed to a handful. But here’s what I didn’t expect: how dramatically my sense of priorities would change.

Where I once browsed pastries behind glass cases, I now get genuinely excited about an aluminum can on my counter. No frosting roses, no delicate layers visible through bakery windows — just industrial packaging that promises something I can actually eat.

Of course, not all gluten-free food comes in cans, and not all of it is this exciting ...for my eyes. If you're dealing with the same restrictions, please share your experiences or tips for cooking, baking, and standout restaurants. And more specifically, if you know a good gluten-free Döner Kebab, I'm craving one...

ON A PERSONAL NOTE

We've known each other for a long time — growing up just kilometres apart in neighbouring Swiss villages. We even went to the same secondary school, just in different classes. It wasn't until years later, through shared friends and our graphic design studies, that we properly connected.

Since 2014, we — David Lüthi @swegenstein and Mirko Leuenberger @mirkokokoko — have worked together on various cultural projects. From the beginning, it was never just DavidMirko. We've always seen our practice as collaborative — working alongside incredible people who've shaped our journey.

In 2018, a Swiss Design Awards nomination gave us the push to officially start a studio under our names — and to found a shared workspace in the heart of Zurich. In 2023, we became UPSET: a space about ideas, collaborations, and the people behind them.

Truth be told, we don't have many pictures of ourselves. Probably because we're either behind the camera, or a little camera-shy. But after more than a decade of creating together, we thought it was time to share a few of those moments — and finally show a broad selection of our work to the world.

🏡 Cataloguing Switzerland’s Green Roof Revolution

.
We designed a comprehensive project atlas exploring Switzerland’s pioneering green roof initiatives. “Grüne Dächer. Geschichte, Planung, Gestaltung” documents 16 flat roofs across the country, showcasing how sustainable habitats can be planned, designed, and managed high above street level. Each roof is dissected through detailed cross-sectional drawings, whilst a thematic scale system enables systematic comparison between projects. This Swiss-bound publication transforms scientific research from ZHAW’s Urban Ecology research group into an accessible visual compendium that bridges the gap between ecological theory and practical urban planning.

Fortification in Transition
The Tank Obstacle as a Relic
7.9.2024 – 5.1.2025
.
Featuring works by Frédéric Dedelley, Anna Froelicher, Simon Graf, Barbara Kiener, Lithic Alliance, Bertilla Spinas, Gabi Vogt, and Florian Wegelin
.
Since World War II, strange stone blocks have been scattered across the landscape. Now overtaken by nature, they cut through meadows, cling to hillsides, and cross hiking trails. The urbanization of the Swiss plateau continues to incorporate the tank obstacles further into the settlement area, creating odd scenarios. Starting from an ethnographic-artistic research project at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), the exhibition draws connections to the present.
.
A collaborative project between the Research Focus on Cultural Analysis in the Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK and Forum Schlossplatz, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) as part of an Agora project @zhdkcampus @swissnationalsciencefoundation

💡 Over 500 Light switches.

An analog but interactive wall panel I designed and build for the EKZ Zurich in 2018. The 2x2m panel uses over 500 Light switches and allows EKZ workers to „draw“ images or write while walking by. The panel on its own works without the use of electricity. When „switched on“ the light switches reflect the surrounding light sources and a pixelated image appears.
.
Thanks to shrijo, #ChristophUntersander and @mirkokokoko for the support.
