The CMA's October Musician of the Month is Sweta Babladi!

Sweta Babladi is a Calgary-born flautist completing her Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at the University of Calgary with Dr. Lucie Jones. She currently performs with the MRU Conservatory’s Calgary Youth Orchestra, and the University of Calgary Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. As a keen chamber musician, Sweta is a founding member of the Seraphina Flute Quartet, performed with the Calgary Chamber Flutes, and has appeared in collaborative concerts with the Calgary Public Library and the Alberta Ballet School. Over the last year, Sweta has had the honor of being a member of Calgary Pro Musica’s 2025-2026 Young Artists Development Program, as well as a Contemporary Performance Lab Fellow for the 2026 Sound Atlas New Music Festival.

Beyond the stage, Sweta is passionate about music education, maintaining a private teaching studio in Calgary with the goal of helping her students build confidence, well-roundedness, and a lifelong appreciation for diverse musical traditions. She has recently expanded into conducting, participating in the 2026 Calgary Conducting Symposium, and currently serves as Assistant Conductor with the University of Calgary’s Symphonic Band.

"I am really looking forward to some of my upcoming ensemble concerts at the University of Calgary and the MRU Conservatory at the end of November! The repertoire I am working on with both orchestras and the U of C Wind Ensemble has been a wonderful but rewarding challenge. I’m also preparing for a senior recital in March at U of C, and putting this program together has been a true passion project that I cannot wait to share!

Beyond being so tight-knit, what I really appreciate about the music community in Calgary is how willing people are to show up and support you as best as they can! Whether that is showing up for events, creating connections, or offering wisdom, there is so much warmth and encouragement towards emerging professional artists here.

Lately, I have been listening to a lot more musical theatre and folk pop! It has been nostalgic to rediscover musicals I loved as a teenager with a new perspective." by @sweta__music

Day 3 of the 2026 Honens Festival: Echoes in at Motion 🎹 Watch artists perform live beside their own past selves using Steinway Spirio technology. Curated by former Laureate Winston Choi. Ep. 4 drops tomorrow.

Thank you Honens for making me this festival happen. It’s so incredible to see musicians coming together to create such a unique experience. I’m so lucky to have had the chance to be a part of this festival. ❤️ by @sweta__music

Day 2 of the Honens festival took us from Élisabeth Pion’s innovative melding of etudes by different composers, to the beautiful King Edward building, where we were completely captured by the performers’ improvisation alongside the Steinway Spirio!

These performances gave us so much opportunity to think about how important it is for artists to re-examine tradition and embrace their creative ideas. 🎶

Get ready to dance along, because Day 3 of Honens is all about music and movement! See you tomorrow! 🤩 by @sweta__music

This day last week, I was at the Calgary Conducting Symposium at the University of Calgary. I helped in organizing the event last summer, and that experience already had me falling in love with conducting. While I spent the last year studying the fundamentals, score studying, and directing the non-existent ensemble in my room at 10pm, this year’s symposium was really my first time conducting an actual ensemble. Over the last week, I kept thinking about what a nerve-wracking, thrilling, and deeply empowering experience it was.

I learned to listen more keenly, think through every musical choice, and consider what diverse programming means today. I learned that conducting is really about wearing my heart on my sleeve, and sharing my musical ideas through intentional body language. I learned that being a beginner does not have to stop me from exploring advanced expressive gestures, and that every single musical experience I have had over the last decade amounts to something uniquely me on the podium. As someone who often fights perfectionism when I am learning something new, being a beginner at this craft feels like starting work on a fun puzzle rather than something I need to figure out as soon as I can.

Thank you so much to every musician in the band who showed up for hours every day, playing the same repertoire over and over again so that we can learn. Thank you also to the friends who made this new experience so much fun, and the incredible coaches who gave me so much to think about: Dr. Brown, Adam, Jolene, and Dr. Pham. I’m excited to keep growing as a conductor and future educator! 💕🪄 by @sweta__music

Reflections on the Honens public concert I attended a couple of weeks ago! It’s always such a pleasure to see pop-ups like this, and is a great reminder that so many people want to engage with music. All it takes is an invitation in 💕 by @sweta__music

From the heartfelt musical landscapes of Brahms and Beethoven to a thrilling duet by Heitor-Villa Lobos, the Honens Piano Project YYC presented a unique program at Calgary’s CORE Shopping Centre on Wednesday, August 12th.

This free public concert featured Calgary Philharmonic musicians Sara Hahn-Scinocco and Antoine St-Onge, as well as the 2025 Honens Gold Laureate, Élisabeth Pion.

We asked the three musicians to tell us about the process behind the program, advice for young musicians, the importance of classical music, and more! by @sweta__music
