Join us for The Sex Worker's Guide to Parenting & ProMomme Vol 2. Launch Event on 7/23–a free community presentation hosted by @feministcenterforcreativework

📍 @thekult_dtla
📅 Thursday, July 23
🕖 6:00pm - 9:00pm

This evening is organized around a viewing party of the @swguidetoparenting film, which responds to familiar narratives about sex work as a threat to “family values” by dropping us into the lives of 6 parents in the sex industry and the making of ProMomme, a parenting magazine created by the LA-based sex workers of @swopla. Written and directed by Kim Ye @kimyekimyekimye, the viewing will be followed by a discussion with the artist, Lauren Levitt, and Lotus Lain.

The night closes with a reception that celebrates the launch of ProMomme Vol.2, giving you the first look at the just released issue published by @cashmachinela and @smingsmingbooks. Sex Workers Outreach Project, Los Angeles @SWOPLA will be tabling, offering community resources, sharing opportunities to get involved, and selling the last remaining editions of the ProMomme Authorized Bootleg and Limited Edition T-shirts, both designed by Sophia Coleman @mailordermilf.

This event is an extension of Kim Ye's work, It’s not a whore house, it’s a whore home featuring The Sex Worker’s Guide to Parenting currently on view as part of Radical Kinship exhibition at FCCW, curated by Chloë Flores @sea_flow. You’re also invited to join us for a walk-through of this exhibition at 2PM at with Kim Ye and Chloë Flores.

In The Sex Worker’s Guide to Parenting, six parents in the sex industry reflect on how erotic labor shapes the ways they care for children, build community, and navigate stigma. Moving between intimate interviews, animated reenactments, and collective research, the film follows the making of a parenting magazine by and for sex workers, and the impact this work has on society at large. This documentary overturns familiar narratives about sex work as a threat to “family values,” recasting its skills as ones that support intentional parenting.

Currently on view at the Feminist Center for Creative Work as a single-channel installation staged as a retro living-room setting. The installation includes personal objects loaned by parents in the film, and Promomme Vol. 1, the sex worker parenting magazine depicted in the documentary.

Immerse yourself in these domestic vibes at the Radical Kinship show curated by @sea_flow before next week’s announcement about how you can see it on a big screen in LA. More details to follow…

Promomme Vol. 1 was co-published by Sming Sming @smingsmingbooks + Cash Machine @cashmachinela + SWOPLA @swopla, and designed by Sophia Coleman @mailordermilf in 2024.

Loaned objects from @lordedestroyer include art by Elly Dallas @tenderspeck, Maia Kobe and legos assembled by his son by @swguidetoparenting
