Teja Deonarine
When I was about six years old, my parents began taking my sister and I to visit our family in Trinidad and Tobago. During those visits, we often went to a well-known beach called “Maracas Beach” where my love for the ocean first began to blossom. From riding the Caribbean waves to walking along the shore and collecting shells, every moment filled me with curiosity and wonder. As a young scientist in the making, exploring the beaches of Trinidad and Tobago ignited a lifelong fascination with marine life and the beauty of the underwater world, sparking the beginning of my passion for ocean conservation. One of the greatest influences on my love for the ocean was my uncle, who ran a small business in Trinidad dedicated to caring for and selling fish and turtles. What stood out to me most about his work was his deep commitment to sustainability and responsible animal care. Spending my summers with him taught me the basics of maintaining healthy aquatic environments, from understanding tank systems to learning the balance needed for species survival. Shadowing my uncle and observing his dedication not only deepened my respect for marine life but also inspired my own desire to protect and preserve the ocean’s ecosystems for future generations. As I’ve grown closer to the ocean, it has guided me toward a passion for water safety and science communication. I see the ocean as both a reflection of myself and a lifeline that connects people to the natural world. My experiences in and around the water have taught me the importance of education, awareness, and accessibility in marine science. Through promoting water safety, I aim to bridge the gap between people and the sea. In doing so I show that understanding and respecting the ocean is key to protecting it. The ocean serves as a powerful platform to highlight the value of citizen science and how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change.
