Did you know there is a nearly forgotten art tradition of the Philippines?

Prior to its colonization, men and women were adorned with ink designs that connected their identity and celebrated their indigenous culture. While once nicknamed Las Islas de los Pintados, many filipinos today are often scolded and warned not to get tattoos due to its negative stereotypes.

Whang-Od is the oldest living mambabatok, the last of her generation and keeps the tradition alive through training her grandnieces.

The purpose of my poster is to call out cultural cleansing, redefine what it means to be Filipino and rekindle the traditions of our past. My love and respect for tattoos extends past my own self expression, but the declaration of my ancestors saying “we were here”. by @swirlypen

Hey! It’s been a while 👋🏽
Just a little (big) life update! I’ve gotten the greatest opportunity to learn from amazing artists at @tattoopeopletoronto and I couldn’t be more grateful! As many of you know, tattooing has been a big dream of mine and I’m so happy to begin! My prayers have been answered and I couldn’t have done it without my friends at Tattoo People & @eum_tattooacademy 🫶🏼
It’s been crazy busy but follow along my journey to tattooing with me!

paying homage to his roots in Jamaica and Canada

to kev! thank you for your constant trust and support 🫶🏼 i really love the way these two unlikely-to-meet birds cross paths in this yin and yang style, representing the harmony of two homes that many of us resonate to.
what birds represent you?
