Gelmerbahn, one of Switzerland’s most thrilling mountain railway experiences! This open air funicular takes you from Handegg up to the stunning turquoise waters of Gelmersee, sitting at around 1,860 metres above sea level 🏔️💙

and trust us, the ride up is an experience on its own!

✨ A few fun facts about the Gelmerbahn ✨

🚞 It has a maximum gradient of 106%, making it Europe’s steepest open funicular railway.
⛰️ It climbs approximately 450 metres in altitude.
🎢 The journey takes around 12 minutes each way.
💙 At the top, you’ll find the beautiful turquoise Gelmersee surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

SAVE THESE TIPS FOR YOUR NEXT SWISS ADVENTURE! 📌

🎟️ Book your tickets in advance. The Gelmerbahn is popular and seats are limited, especially on sunny days.
🥾 Bring proper hiking shoes. If you plan to walk around the lake, be prepared for rocky, narrow and sometimes challenging sections.
🥪 Pack your own food and snacks. There are no restaurants or food facilities up at the lake.
🧥 Bring an extra layer. Mountain weather can change quickly, even on a beautiful sunny day.
📸 Don’t rush back down! Give yourself time to enjoy the lake, take photos and soak in the incredible scenery.

If you’re looking for something a little different from the usual Swiss tourist spots, add Gelmerbahn and Gelmersee to your bucket list.

Would you dare take this ride? 👀

Welcome to Foroglio, Canton Ticino — a tiny stone village tucked away in Val Bavona, where rustic houses, dramatic mountain cliffs, and a roaring waterfall create one of Switzerland’s most enchanting scenes. ✨

Follow the @swiss.andbeyond for more travel inspo ✨

This is your reminder that Switzerland is so much more than its famous lakes and mountain peaks. Sometimes, the best places are the quiet little villages you almost miss. 🤍

📍 FOROGLIO, SWITZERLAND — SAVE THIS MINI TRAVEL GUIDE!

💦 Visit the waterfall
The famous Foroglio Waterfall plunges approximately 110 metres down the cliffs behind the village.

🥾 Want more than a quick visit?
Extend your adventure with the Foroglio–Calnègia–Foroglio hike, which takes around 3–4 hours. Expect stone steps, forest paths, historic hamlets, and beautiful alpine scenery. Wear proper hiking shoes.

🤫 A fun fact you probably didn't know
Despite the Bavona Valley generating hydroelectric power, most of its villages are still without a conventional electricity supply. Imagine living in a place where life moves at a completely different pace.

🏡 Explore the stone village
Wander through the narrow paths, admire the traditional stone houses, and look out for the historic chapel dating back to the 15th century. Please respect private property, people have lived and worked here for generations.

🚍 Plan your journey
You can reach the valley by car or public transport. If travelling by PostBus, check the timetable carefully before leaving, as services can be limited. Download your maps in advance, especially if you plan to hike deeper into Val Calnègia, where mobile reception can be unavailable.

🍂 When should you visit?
Spring and summer bring lush greenery and flowing water, while autumn adds beautiful golden colours to the valley. The village is traditionally inhabited from April to October, so check seasonal services before visiting later in the year.

⚠️ Safety tip: Be careful around the waterfall and river pools. Rocks can be slippery, and swimming can be dangerous when water levels are high.

✨ Save this for your next Swiss adventure!

this is the gastlosen - switzerland’s own dolomites. 15km of razor sharp peaks on the border of Fribourg / Bern / Vaud. not italy, just the swiss edition 🛘

Riggisalp → Euschelspass → Schwarzsee, I’d estimate around:

Distance: ~10–12 km
Walking time: around 3½ – 4½ hours
Descent: roughly 600 – 800 m
Difficulty: moderate mountain hike, with some steeper sections

The hike to Oeschinensee that I’d been wanting to do for so long🥹🏔️

we started from kandersteg taking our time and enjoying everything along the trail. we saw so many cows along the way and honestly they made us so happy 🐮 there’s just something about seeing them peacefully hanging out in the swiss alps that makes the whole experience feel even more special.

we finally made it to Oeschinensee and wow the views were absolutely worth it 😍 we found a beautiful spot by the lake, had our lunch there and just sat taking everything in..

and because we were already there ofc we had to go for a dip 💦 after the hike it felt so refreshing..

Definitely a day to remember ✨
