Happy Anniversary! ❤️

25 years together, 20 years married today. A year full of milestones.

Thank you for a lifetime of friendship, adventure, love and joy. Through all the years and all the ways the terrain has shifted, we continue to meet at the sea — and somehow, there, everything feels balanced, abundant and safe.

You are my rock, my love and my greatest adventure.

20 years married, 25 years together… and this is just the beginning. ❤️ @mark_tesi by @swmwithme

What does a woman carry?

As I continue researching maritime women, I keep returning to this question.

Women in Åland and Kinhu. Seaweed gatherers. Japanese Fisherwomen. NYC Lifesaving women. SF B-girls.. All circa 1920- current.

Different places. Different circumstances. But lives connected through water, labor, waiting, survival and female community.

What does a woman carry when she goes to sea?

What does she carry while she waits for someone to return?

What does she carry from her mother?

What does she carry for another woman?

I’m beginning with the objects.

A pocket knife. A piece of cloth. Thread. Rope. Tools. Things small enough to be tucked into a pocket, tied around the body or passed from one set of hands to another.

But I’m realizing that “carrying” in this work is becoming about much more than possessions.

Women carry knowledge.
Responsibility.
Memory.
Grief.
Friendship.
Stories.
The knowledge of how to survive—and how to help someone else survive.

This pocket knife is the beginning of a series of drawings that will become woodcuts and prints
and eventually make their way onto textiles and bandanas.

I’m interested in how these everyday objects can become symbols—a visual language connecting women across water, place and generations.

What do we carry with us, and what do we pass on?

It typically takes me 2-3 years to complete a body of work. I spend at least a year researching my content, stories and authentic imagery. Then about one year to complete the works that include large scale woodcuts, fabric and quilted pieces and often a product or mural.

Right now my studio is full of beginnings-research, photographs, drawings, pieces of old fabrics, carved blocks, notes, stories and ideas that find their way into the final work.

I have been thinking deeply about women whose lives have been shaped by the sea- women who worked, waited, traveled, raised families and built communities around water. I keep returning to ideas of camaraderie, matriarchal histories, labor, motherhood and the objects women make and carry with them.

And somewhere within all of this is my own story.

My mother “Cookie” was a quilter. I am a printmaker. More and more those two ways of making are beginning to meet.

The process that I take to create a body of work will change throughout the year before my show opening. This is the part that I want to share. The creative journey make this work:

The research.

The drawing.

The carving.

The sewing.

The failures.

The discoveries.

The stories that unfold into visual language.

This is where it all begins.

Inspiration!

The B-Girls, sometimes called “percentage girls,” were women hired by bars to encourage male patrons to buy them drinks—earning a percentage of each sale. Because being a “B-Girl” was not itself illegal, women were often arrested under vague charges such as vagrancy. Police records reveal little about the true number of arrests, leaving many of these women’s stories undocumented and forgotten.

Their history reminds us that women’s labor, survival, and public presence have often been shaped by forces far larger than the labels imposed upon them.

When women were arrested they were quarantined, known as “Vag- Quar”!!
