ARCH502 Design Studio II — Second Floor Plan

Outdoor public plazas and a winding labyrinth of walkways lined with stalls allow visitors to navigate the site not only horizontally, but vertically as well. These paths connect to the fabrication wing of the site where visiting artists can compose new work out of used materials, and also lead to one of two main exterior plazas, where one can witness the seasonal experience of the site and engage in temporary food markets or public gatherings.

ARCH502 Design Studio II - Ground Floor Plan

The construct acts as a sieve for the different entities that pass through it — both people and materials descend into opposing locations in the site at the ground floor level from their respective points of entry, with visitors descending a flight of stairs towards the main entrance from the street and material dropoffs entering via a conveyor belt from the Viaduct.

Inspired by this urban setting of dilapidation from the overgrown Viaduct to the eerie abandoned steam plant, this project imagines a fictional world where it follows the “scavenger world” trope found in many sci-fi, fantasy, and futuristic dystopian settings — in which places of abandonment, dilapidation, and neglect actually cultivate communities of thrifty resourcefulness, resiliency, and an entire industry fueled by the resell and repurposing of found objects and materials. by @swojarc

The history of the 10th ST & Buttonwood site in the Callowhill neighborhood holds an extensive industrial history, reinforced by the long-unserviced Viaduct rail line running directly adjacent. This history is also evidenced by several abandoned industrial factories and plants — most notably including the Willow Steam Generation plant less than five blocks to the southwest. This presence of abandonment is prevalent throughout Philadelphia – from hundreds of foreclosed, vacant rowhouses, to various semi-demolished factories and industrial plants like the Steam Plant as explored and studied through these preliminary collages. by @swojarc
