A Major Breakthrough for the One Shark Project! 🦈📡

On August 28th, a satellite tag was deployed on a 2.81m tiger shark, programmed to detach after 180 days. We usually rely on the data transmitted once the tag resurfaces, but these transmissions are limited by battery constraints after such a long deployment at sea. Recovering a tag is therefore a rare and valuable event!

Thanks to the dedication of local stakeholders @snsm.sxm , this tag was successfully retrieved, providing us with an exceptionally detailed dataset. Initial analyses indicate that this shark returns approximately every two months to the waters of Saint Martin, Saint Barthélemy, Anguilla, and Saba. These valuable insights will help us better understand shark movements in the region and enhance safety measures for ocean users.

Successful Satellite Tag Recovery! 🎯🌊

For over a month, we searched for contacts willing to help us reach the open ocean to recover our satellite tag. Thanks to the incredible support of the @snsm.sxm and the CROSS Antilles-Guyane, we were able to coordinate between the land and sea teams, ensuring we had the latest position updates.

Yesterday, March 8th—four days after its first surface transmission—we set off on a 50NM journey from Saint Martin. With perfect weather conditions, we picked up the tag’s signal on our radar, and in just 45 minutes (a new record to beat!), the SNSM pilots and observers spotted and recovered it in the middle of a small sargassum patch.

This marks the beginning of what we hope will be many more successful recoveries! We’re now experienced in tracking and retrieving satellite tags, and we’re eager to support future collaborations.

If you know of any programs using similar tags in the Caribbean, we’d love to help! Let’s make this the first of many. 🔥🌎

Today, I spent St. Martin Day, our national holiday, with some of our islands’ most important yet most misunderstood residents. Together with the team from the @naturefoundationsxm and @one_shark_project , we tagged a large male nurse shark and, on the next check, the largest tiger shark ever tagged on St. Martin—a 3.45-meter female. We placed satellite tags to track these sharks throughout the region, gathering essential data for shark conservation. Thanks for the photo, Dan Norwood—proof that I actually still leave my desk! It was a pleasure to have the film crew from WoW the Nature Film with us to capture this work.

Eleven (!) years ago, I joined my first BRUV (Baited Remote Underwater Video) study in the Dutch Caribbean as an MSc student with @uniwageningen. Today, I’m proud to lead the @globalfinprint 2 project in this region, initiated by @motemarinelab. Together with my friend and colleague @tadziobervoets I now supervise students and coordinate fieldwork as we work to monitor and protect local and regional shark and ray populations.

Over recent months, our students have deployed BRUVs along the coast of Sint Maarten with @sxmdivers and @naturefoundationsxm, gathering essential data on local sharks and rays. With support from partners across the Caribbean, we’re expanding our research to help safeguard these incredible and underappreciated fishes in the Dutch Caribbean 🦈💪🏻

At SXM Divers we provide a boutique service, and dive in small groups, so that our guests can enjoy the best marine life encounters St Maarten has to offer. To capture the best fish portraits it is necessary to take your time and allow the subject to get comfortable with your presence. I found this colourful grouper hiding on a reef dive here in St Maarten, and managed to record the exact moment it made eye contact with my camera for maximum effect!

A highlight of diving in the Man of War Shoal marine park is encounters with spotted eagle rays. They can be skittish and don't always like to get close to scuba divers, but if you give them space and let them approach you instead of chasing them, you can capture nice images like this one. 📷 @dan_norwood
