One year ago today, we heard the words “hypoplastic left heart syndrome” for the very first time. We immediately started the deep dive into what HLHS was, what Marans life might look like, and tried to wrap our heads around a future that suddenly looked very different than the one we had imagined.

I never could have known how much I would learn over the past year. About hearts and anatomy, medical terms and medication schedules, feeding tubes and procedures, and all the things that can come with having a child with one working ventricle. What a wild, scary, emotional, joyous, celebratory ride it’s been.

Today marks two months at home🏡

It’s hard to put into words how sweet these last two months have been. After so much of Maran’s life being spent in the hospital, it has been such a gift to simply be home. We’ve gotten to watch her do all the little ordinary things like playing, smiling, babbling, making messes, giggling, and just being a baby. There’s something so beautiful about the normal moments when you know just how many prayers it took to get here. We’re soaking up every bit of this season and thanking God for these days at home with our miracle girl🤍

Today we walked for our Miracle Girl, Maran, for her heart warrior baby bestie, Lainey, and for every family whose lives have been changed by congenital heart disease🩵

CHDs are the most common type of birth defect, affecting nearly 1 in 100 babies born. While medical advances have helped more heart babies survive, CHD is still a lifelong journey for so many, including Maran🫀

Thank you to everyone who donated, prayed bold prayers, and walked with us today and every day. We are so incredibly thankful for our village and for the people who continue to show up for our girl🤍

What an honor it was to walk for our girls, to raise awareness for CHD, to help support research that give future heart babies a brighter outcome, to celebrate fellow heart warriors still fighting, and to honor the heart angels that we will carry with us forever💪🏻❤️🪽 by @syd_jac

There are moments in life that divide your story into two chapters: before and after. A year ago today was when we entered the chapter of after.

One year ago was the day we were told that our daughter had a cystic hygroma and there was a 1/3 chance we would lose her before 24 weeks. We were asked if we wanted to seek termination and I remember crying so hard that I threw up during the appointment. Almost immediately, the excitement of expecting a baby was replaced with fear, uncertainty, and overwhelming grief. I learned what it feels like to hold hope and heartbreak in the same hand. I learned what it feels like to hold your breath and never be able to release it. I learned the feeling of your heart dropping every time you got a call from the doctors.

As our journey unfolded, the diagnosis became bigger than we ever imagined and in that, God taught us that joy and sorrow are not opposites. Some of our darkest days have also revealed His greatest faithfulness. People have asked us if knowing everything we know now, would we choose life again and my answer will always be yes. A thousand times, yes. Not because the road has been easy because it hasn’t and not because our hearts haven’t broken because they have but because loving Maran has been one of the greatest gifts God has ever entrusted to us.

Maran, I will never stop thanking God for all that has happened over the past year and I will never stop thanking God that we chose life for you🤍 by @syd_jac

170 days of hospital rooms becoming our home, of monitors beeping through the night, of endless rounds with doctors, of procedures, of setbacks, of victories, of tears, of prayers, and of hope. Our little warrior girl has undergone two open-heart surgeries, fought through endless complications, and came out on the other side of an ECMO that left us unsure if we would ever get to bring her home.

Maran has shown us what courage looks like. She has fought every single day with a strength that simply doesn’t make sense for someone so little. She is living proof that miracles don’t always happen in an instant. Sometimes they happen over hundreds of long days, one answered prayer at a time.

To the doctors who operated on her tiny heart, to the nurses who loved her like she was their own, to the therapists that helped her reach so many milestones we weren’t sure we would reach, and to the members of her care team who championed us every step of the way, thank you will never be enough... You have celebrated every milestone with us, cried with us during the hardest moments of our lives, answered our endless questions, and loved our girl so incredibly well. After 170 days, you are no longer just our care team. You have become family.

This journey has changed every part of who I am. It has deepened my faith in ways I never expected. It has taught me to advocate fiercely for my daughter. It has taught me medical terminology I never wanted to learn and given me strength I never knew I had. It has reminded me that sometimes courage looks like simply showing up again tomorrow.

To everyone who has prayed for Maran, shared our story, encouraged us, bought meals, sent messages, donated, cried with us, celebrated with us, and faithfully believed alongside us that God wasn’t finished writing her story, thank you. You have carried us in more ways than you’ll ever know.

Today, we leave this hospital with hearts overflowing. Not because everything is perfect or because the journey is finished but because only God could write a story like this. We’ve been waiting 170 days to say these words… Welcome home, our sweet miracle girl🏡 taken in Dell Children's Medical Center by @syd_jac

Ta ta, TPN! 👋💛

Today marks another huge milestone in Maran’s journey. After 87 straight days (and 136 total days on and off), Maran is officially coming off of TPN!

For those who may not know, TPN (total parenteral nutrition) is IV nutrition that has provided Maran with everything her little body needed when she wasn’t able to safely tolerate enough milk. There were many days when her gut needed rest, when feeding wasn’t possible, and when TPN was truly life sustaining for her.

Seeing that yellow bag hanging on her IV pole became such a normal part of our life over the past several months. It carried her through some of her sickest days and while we’re incredibly grateful for what it provided, we are beyond excited to say, “Ta ta, TPN!”

This milestone is another reminder of how far our sweet girl has come and is another step toward going home!

We’re so proud of you, Maran. Keep showing us just how strong you are, little warrior girl💛 by @syd_jac
