Back Story:
The Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his late wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan was so saddened by Mumtaz’s early death that hid from the public eye for one whole year. It is said that Shah Jahan was “paralyzed by grief.”

When he broke his solitude, Shah Jahan was nearly unrecognizable. It was near this time that Shah Jahan decided he wanted to built a monument honoring his true love. The monument would represent the buildings of heaven that Mumtaz Mahal now lived in. The project took 22 years to complete, including 5 years for the gardens alone.

It is estimated that in 1653 when the Taj Mahal was completed, the monument cost 32 million rupees to build. Today that value would be estimated to be somewhere between $827 million to $1 billion USD. There are a variety of 28 precious stones used in the ornate marble throughout the project. We had the amazing opportunity to visit a marble shop in Agra where talented artisans showed us the intricate work used at the Taj Mahal.

Shah Jahan did not avoid difficulties after the Taj Mahal was built. In 1658, Shah Jahan’s throne was overturned by his son, Augrangzeb. As a result, Shah Jahan was imprisoned. His only comfort was that he could see his beautiful masterpiece, the Taj Mahal, from his cell. After his death, Shah Jahan was laid to his final resting place next to his love, Mumtaz Mahal, inside the Taj Mahal. by @sydgrace418

Learning my roots! 🌱

Thankful for this once in a lifetime trip! I was able to see the pages of my own story written in this place. India, you are colorful, vibrant, and alive. No place will ever compare to your unique spark. ✨ by @sydgrace418

hustle + bustle 🛺

During our time in India, Brett and I were able to tour a spice market! Khari Baoli is one of the oldest and largest spice markets in Asia. Thanks to our amazing tour guide, we got a first hand experience of the market and even met one of the shop owners. The smells were strong, the streets packed, and the pathways twisted and curved in all directions. We saw merchants wheeling large canvas bags of whole spices by hand through the narrow streets. We followed up our trip with a rickshaw ride through the packed streets!
