On Sunday nearly 200 people came together to celebrate my dad. These past few weeks have been so dizzying, but the way our village has shown up for us has been so special. Friends, family, and even people I’ve never met before from literally all over the world went out of their way, traveled and took time to come to the place that was a second home and family for my dad. @churchillspub is so much more than that - it’s a place of community for so many people. Staff, regulars and locals, and even sometimes those just passing through. I did my homework in the corner tables, learned how to play pool, fought with my sisters over the video games, and always played my girly pop or emo music on the jukebox when I could convince my dad to give me a $10. My sister met her husband there, and some of our lifelong friends, now family, have come from Churchill’s. I will be forever grateful that we have a spot to go visit dad and raise a pint to him. Thank you to everyone for all of the love and support my sisters and I have received. There’s going to be so many sad, hard days ahead for us, but I am truly the luckiest girl in the world with the very best people around me. My dad was an absolute fucking legend, and I couldn’t be more proud to be a Dowson. 🤍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

if you knew my dad (which always seemed like most people around here did), you know that the grumpiest, most sarcastic guy was also the biggest softie. In what felt like the darkest, hardest time of my life, the man dropped everything, got in a U-Haul with his ex-wife, and packed up & moved me and my dog Chanel into his house. What was supposed to be a temporary situation turned into an unexpected, entirely new chapter in my relationship with my dad.

When Covid kept us inside for months, we spent more time together than ever, making dinners and cocktails (lots of takeout, if we’re being completely honest), watching Love Actually on repeat during the holidays, going through his old vinyl collection, and sitting on the patio smoking a cigarette while me and the dog sat under the misters on an ungodly hot summer day in Vista. When we made the move to Carlsbad a few years ago, we were so happy and proud of our new little spot near the beach—a place that was really both of ours.

Any time I was sick or heartbroken, or it was even just a cold, rainy day, I’d hear a knock at my door with a cup of tea. My dad wasn’t a man of many words, but that’s how he showed he cared—reminding you that he was there if you needed anything at all.

But it wasn’t just like that for me and my sisters—this man from a foreign country with a funny accent somehow became the glue holding an entire community together. He loved Churchill’s so much that he went from being a regular to the face everyone looked for behind the bar when they walked into the pub for nearly 25 years. It has been overwhelming, yet incredibly rewarding, hearing from so many people who cared for him. It brings me so much comfort to know that when he wasn’t with his girls, he was surrounded by so many people who loved him, always.

The sudden loss of my father leaves an immense but immeasurable hole in my chest. But, I’ll see him in every pint of Guinness (with the G split, of course), feel him during every England match, and hear him in every Oasis song forever. I love you, Daddy.
