People will tell you grief and death get easier. Those people lie. Maybe not on purpose, they’re only trying to make you feel better because what else are they supposed to say? But in the end it’s still a lie. Grieving someone and remembering how you loved them and looked forward to spending time with them and the continuous replay of THAT day never gets easier. You only grow used to the gigantic hole in your heart that feels as if you’ve been shot by a missile and become somewhat numb to the feeling. All you can do is remember the happiness they brought you, who they were and the things they would say. You will, selfishly, never not miss that person.

I miss you day after day Grandad. It’s still unbelievable that I can’t sit at your kitchen table and have ice cream while you tell me the same stories I’ve heard a thousand times. I can’t ride with you to the post office and listen to your 60s country station. But what I will do is smile and hold on to every one of those memories with all I’ve got. Thank you for creating them with me so I’ll always have them. Thank you for sharing your life with me so I’ll always know you. Thank you for being the wittiest person I’ve ever met. I quote you multiple times a day and I hope you smile when I do, because I smile every time too.

My cowboy rode away. The man who could put a smile on your face no matter what season you were in. The man who taught me an enormous amount of lessons I wouldn’t understand until I was older, and some I’m still learning. The man who would never turn down a sweet treat and always shared a cookie with me. The man who raised me along side mom and dad. The man who I first looked up to. My Grandad. Thank you for all the times you took care of me and then letting me take care of you. It was an honor to be there for you through this despicable disease .
