Street Dance x @dancersalleysydney: Waving Edition 🌊🔉👋

Introducing some of the awesome street dance styles and communities at Dancers Alley 💃🏻🕺

History/background:
Waving is a street dance that originates in the US is defined by the transfer goes in, through and out of your body with the emphasis of muscle control.
The idea of a wave pattern in dance has existed for a very long time manifesting in many cultural dances that predate Street Dance. However, in the same way that wave dances differ across cultures, Waving as Street Dance is unique through its History, Context and Culture.

In Street Dance, wave patterns started to be most prominently adapted to Funk in the 60s where people used what we call the “tidal wave” as a social dance. In the 70s, waving evolved in California alongside popping in moves such as the “Centipede” (the first synchronised waves that appeared in routines). Waving continued to grow as a dance and among those who innovated this dance at that time are dancers such as Darryl Johnson aka King Cobra, King Python aka King Snake aka Pop n Taco, Mr Smooth, Darryl Stokes, Boardman, No Bone Tyrone, and Slick Dogg.

There are many more dancers who are accredited for contributing to the evolution of Waving to what we see today such as JSmooth, Tempo and Funktion. Furthermore, while it is important to recognise the roots of this dance form from both a Street Dance perspective as well as the wider expression of wave patterns in other cultural dances; it is also important to recognise and respect the unique differences that set these dance forms apart from each other which will always be: History, Context and Culture.

@iamsamwich another member of the 30+ club his waves unlocked on his dance skill tree when he started taking street dance classes from @jayx.nguyen such is the way when thick legged, big backs dance.🦵🏾🦬 They find commonality, in the strife of learning from little backs and have to gather to fight the dance monarchy. 💪🏾💪🏾

So a snake walked into the bar, and the bartender said. "How'd you do that?" 🤣😭

• Non-uniformly accelerated rectilinear motion: The acceleration varies with time or position, requiring calculus-based methods for analysis

@mrkitqt one of the members of the honorary 30+ squad, in Sydney waving. Before waving, he was breaking hearts, breaking ankles and breaking the borders between breaking, popping and choreo (is that even considered a style anymore? 😂)

If you ever need a reminder of how we used to dance in the 2000s, just chuck on some RnB and ask Mark to jam. He might be in the 30+ squad, but his knees are still like that, of a mid 20 year old 😁 eternally baby face, but still Kuya.

Waving is considered a universal signal for hello and goodbye
because it effectively combines attention-grabbing movement with a display of non-hostile intent. The gesture originated from historical practices where individuals showed open, empty hands
to prove they were unarmed
and peaceful, a necessity in eras when travelers or strangers might be threatening.

Im sure you're wondering, what is a wave?

According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, the noun wave has several distinct definitions depending on context:
