Grandma, my friends dem say I need therapy & need to talk to somebody; my mama say I got PTSD. My daddy had to force me back in the house after they came & took you away & I could do nothing but stand in the street crying. I’ve been strong so long, they say it’s okay not to be. But somehow all those days I would come downstairs early a.m. & catch you sitting at the table praying; I knew I would need it for days like these.

This post is long overdue, (excuse the length as I finally have the courage to write out my sentiments) as this time last year all of our family & friends from Jamaica, England, & around the US came in town to celebrate & honor you on your 100th birthday. Even the mayor of the city. But every time I’ve tried to put the words together, I break down & erase it all because I am still in disbelief. Shock. It all happened so fast & unexpectedly. Yes you were 100 years old physically; only. Your mind was still sharp & I was sure you’d live another 20 years. I’ve told people I feel like my life started over; like I died with you as I literally sat there, laid with you & watched you transition.

In my only 30 years of life here in this realm, I feel I’ve experienced more pain than somebody twice my age. I’ve experienced so much sadness, grief, heartache. Losing family & friends to suicide, homicide, drug overdose, freak accidents, cancers, anything you can think of I’ve been through & had to get through like it was nothing. Experienced so much death I start to question if it’s even real?? It can’t be…Nonetheless, I’ve been able to pick myself up & prevail every time. But this? This pain is different. It takes my breath away, it puts lumps in my stomach, turns me insomniac. Makes me feel crazy for pretending that you’re “just asleep.” They weren’t lying when they said “you’ll never experience love like your grandmother’s”. by @sydwallstreet

When I traveled through Cabo Verde, I experienced more than beautiful view$. I witnessed a culture built on resilience, pride, & community.

Seeing Cabo Verde reach the World Cup was bigger than football. It represented every child from a third-world country with a dream, every family that sacrificed, & every Cape Verdean proudly carrying their flag acro$$ the world.
