S/Y Katariina’s route from Turku to Dean’s blue hole at Bahamas is planned to go through the best freediving spots on the way. In freediving gear the crew of Katariina trusts on @freexperience_official. Here we are checking out the sea life in between of training at the wreck of Cortega on the coast of Porto Santo.

If you are seeing this, it means we are somewhere on the open sea heading towards Porto Santo! ⛵️ It also means that we are most probably safe from orcas…🫍
You can follow our journey from PredictWind, link in bio.

This would be our longest sail so far, ~800NM. It’s just two of us (plus the windpilot if we ever get it working properly 😭).

Here is some preparation we did before leaving.

1. First! Safety. We have a grab bag ready for the worst chase scenario. It holds our most valuable treasures, passports, cash money, some snacks, water etc. Its small, but we also have another one for warm clothes and so on.

2. Let’s get rid of our dinghy! Its too big to have onboard fully, and too heavy to tow.

3. Explore.

4. Groceries. Luckily we didn’t need much more, because Katariina is already filled up with food and liquids.

5. A cat 🐈‍⬛ Muxia is actually ruled by cats.

6. Just a reminder, wash the g😤ddamn fruits and vegetables. Last week we found a little animal in our potato cellar. It was not a pleasant surprise. We haven’t seen them after a little poisoning operation, but we won’t take a risk anymore.
The funny part here is that everyone told us that beforehand: “wash your vegetables”, “never bring cardboard onboard”.
I guess we are that kind of people, that we just have to do all the mistakes ourselves ;)

7. And guess who was trying to get a free ride from us 🫪 No thank you!

And then food preparation, filling up the water tanks, laundry, cleaning, insurance coverage area updates, starlink…

Jahuu! Finally we are starting to dive!

Our plan was to go spearfishing. And yes, we did so. But only a small part was for that. We really admire the ocean and the beauty that it holds. It doesn’t so in the video, but it was amazing! We were already half way to freezing, when we bothered to load the spearguns.

The plan was to dive as much as possible because we love freediving. So far, it hasn’t quite worked out that way (yet!). There always seems to be something else that needs doing. It also takes a surprising amount of effort to find suitable dive spots, deal with all the equipment, and find the energy after a long day. But freediving is something we want to focus more later on.

Biskajan lahden ylitys Audierne, Ranska - Viveiro, Espanja. 21.7.-23.7.2026. 312 NM 51 h 45 min.

Lähdettiin mukavassa sivumyötäisessä ankkurista Audiernen edustalta aamutuimaan. Aluksi väisteltiin troolareita, joita oli rannikon edustalla ainakin parikymmentä. Ei ihme, että kalakannat ovat vaarantuneet.

Tuuli yltyi mukavasti ja ensimmäinen yö meni noin 15 m/s tuulissa ja kolmemetrisessä aallokossa hieman haastavissa olosuhteissa. Toinen vuorokausi oli mitä parhainta slööriä hieman kevyemmässä aallokossa ja noin 10 m/s myötätuulessa, joka jiipin jälkeen tuli mukavammin sivusta kuin alkuun.

Loppumatka oli silkkaa nautintoa ja rutiinit toimivat mainiosti 3 h vahtivuoroissa ja hyvin ennakoidulla muonahuollolla, kiitos Iiriksen. Miehistö pelasi hyvin yhteen ja kaikkien mielet tuntuivat asettuvan valtameren taajuuksille.

Saapumista Viveiroon sävytti miekkavalashyökkäykset, joita tapahtui saapumisvuorokauden sisällä yhteensä neljä aivan lähivesillä. Kolmen veneen peräsimet rikkoutuivat ja yksi vene upposi. Selvisimme hieman tietämättöminä tuurilla ehjinä satamaan. Olimme vain tuntia ennen toista hyökkäystä samassa sijainnissa hyökkäyspaikasta.

Illalla nautimme erinomaisen illallisen Viveiron vanhassa kaupungissa ja aamulla ylityksessä mukana ollut Mikael hyppäsi kotimatkalle Jyväskylään. Me puolestamme päädyimme aamulla auttamaan viereistä espanjalaisvenettä miekkavalashyökkäyksen vahinkojen selvittelyssä ja päädyimme viettämään mukavan aamupäivän tapasten äärellä heidän veneensä kannella.

English Channel island — Guernsey, Moulin Huet Bay 🇬🇬

Hidden paradise (almost) just for us!

We were here with strong NE winds and current. Went for a small swim, checked the anchor and tried our dinghy for the first time. Explored the beautiful site just in time for the sunset and slept tight until morning. We continued our journey around midday, a fortunately missed the best tidal window and changed the original plan from Paimpol to Lézardrieux.

We have seen, heard and been in many storms, but never anything like this. Luckily we were on a safe harbour, watching it from the side.

Utklippan was very nice and you can see a lot of seelion here!
