One Deck Wednesday is back at @madsquirrelhertford Wednesday 2nd September with a double header of deep-digging DJs.

Simon McCutcheon, better known as Syko, has been crate-digging and shaping underground dance music for over three decades.

His obsession with wax began in the 1980s, fuelled by the rise of Electro and Hip Hop. Digging deeper into the origins of the genre, he tracked down the original 70s funk, soul, and breakbeats that formed its backbone. As the late ‘80s rave explosion hit, his sound evolved across the club dance-floors of London and Ibiza. By the early ‘90s, Simon was behind the turntables at Hertford’s iconic Parliament Music Record Shop, mixing the freshest underground dance cuts. When offered his wages, he turned down cash in favour of pure vinyl, building a lethal collection of ultra-rare white labels and test pressings.

It wasn’t long before Syko stepped from behind the decks and into the studio, becoming a pivotal UK producer during the formative era of Hardcore Breakbeat, Jungle, and Drum & Bass. Syko continues to produce new music, whilst continuing to hunt down undiscovered vinyl, refine his craft, and expand his sonic footprint. His upcoming release, Record Bag by Syko (Double Vinyl Album) — Revisits the foundational Hip Hop, Soul, and Funk roots that started it all. Due for release Autumn 2026 on Heavy Planet Records.

Songs of Praise are Martin and Alex AKA Marts & Mista V. Both have over 30 years experience of digging in the crates. They’ve been running a fortnightly internet radio show for 14 years and played Stanton Calling from 2013 to its cancellation in 2023. Their music reflects whatever the situation is before them, so expect to hear anything from Ambient, Yacht Rock, Re-edits & Disco to Funk, Soul & Jazz. by @syko1972
