Building a life that is worthy of her arrival has been my North Star for as long as I’ve been healing. Every chain I have broken, every risk I have taken to create a life that is truly safe and free was so she could shine to her fullest potential. I love the business I am building that is building me 🤎

I am so grateful to be surrounded by people who care about my work, who understand what it means to me and what it has cost me, who supported me at the outer limits of my physical and emotional exhaustion all year. You have given me the same safe community and belonging that I strive to restore within our clients.

The only way to celebrate this moment was to relax and we did just that 🤍

We are so proud of our friend Symone for taking the leap and starting her own firm dedicated to advocating for survivors of abuse.

This work is close to our hearts. Our own practice is centered on representing people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives, and we feel lucky to share that space with lawyers like Symone, who bring both compassion and strength to the work.

It is also incredibly inspiring to watch young women build businesses and practices of their own. Entrepreneurship requires a particular kind of vulnerability and confidence—you are betting on yourself, making difficult decisions, and carrying a heavy weight on your shoulders.

In her first year, Symone has earned incredible results for her clients while continuing to invest in and give back to her community.

I founded my law firm on my belief that when ethics and integrity are the centerpiece of the practice of law, the results will follow. I built a business model exclusively around the specialized legal and emotional needs of survivors. The business model works.

I am proud of the role we play in our community. I am proud of the survivors we have helped for free. I am proud of all of the services we are committed to providing that we don’t “have to” provide. And I am proud to own and scale a law firm that is truly a safe space for women lawyers to be excellent.

I have made a career out of suffering well. I can sit at the sea floor and hold my breath, and I don’t need anyone on the surface to applaud or understand that scary monsters really do exist down here. I am healed enough to know the greatest privilege is to have the strength to keep diving back in and to carry back the truth of what I refuse to unsee.

This work is heavy. Our work days are not normal. We stand in front of our clients’ trauma and absorb it for them however we can. Where we systemically do not have the power to protect our clients, we experience it as professional failure. And so no individual company, organization, or person can lead in this space on their own. We need each other. We must support each other to be able to stay in the fight.

The Chicago Police Department has made it more difficult to report SA: it can now only be done over the phone or in person—an inherently more overwhelming and less accurate alternative to submitting a report online.

If you’re going to report…

1️⃣ Write out the core facts you want to share in advance and keep a copy of that statement;

2️⃣ Ask for the number of your police report to increase the chances one is actually being made and to streamline your lawyer’s ability to obtain it in time; and

3️⃣ Text a trusted member of your support system that you reported.

Reporting to the police is often a traumatizing and powerless experience for survivors. Many survivors understandably don’t see how criminally punishing their abuser will help them heal. Only you can decide you’re ready and willing to engage with the criminal justice system. Working with a civil attorney can help you understand what to expect.

The truth is that building an ethical, sustainable, profitable, and scalable business will cost you yourself for the first year. Worth it? Absolutely. Never a day I question that. But my entire personality has changed to build what I know otherwise will not exist. I am quieter and more reserved than I once was. “Relaxing,” “support,” and “boundaries” mean something entirely different than when I was building someone else’s dream.

Protecting your peace and privacy means something totally different when you are building a business that requires public access to you.
