Request for proposals! New Works 2027 applications ARE OPEN.

New Works supports independent dance artists by commissioning them to make original performance pieces. This Chicago-based program reflects the founding principles of Synapse Arts, connecting artists with one another to share resources and develop their voices through the creation of unique artworks. New Works is a flexible program that centers on dancemaking process instead of a product. It is a learn-by-doing structure for trying new things and developing skills with support.

The 2027 cycle will begin in January, with final showings, screenings, or works-in-progress sharings as the culmination, during Chicago Dance Month in late June 2027.

➡ ️ Application link, Guidelines, and FAQs can be found at www.synapsearts.com/new-works
Applications close November 6th at 11:59 PM CDT.

This work started with understanding my personal journey with suppressed rage. As a Latinx person, born in Lima [Peru] and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, and then moving around here and there in the U.S., I realized that there were no avenues of going through these emotions without being demonized or judged or rejected or isolated in society. I found this common not only in my family, but also outside. So what if I just create a new archetype, make one for myself, and hopefully other people will resonate with it? ...That came to be MATADORA. MATADORA basically means a “she killer,” but for me, it felt like it could be this divine energy that people could access and conquer their rage, their traumas, and come anew to the world, accepting their complexity. MATADORA is a warrior, but it's like: the only way out is in.

//

Do Not Miss! Our 2026 Season begins with INSÉKTA's MATADORA! MATADORA is a new work of Latine Futurism about an untamable creature and the blistering rage that can smother or unchain her: beast, or diosx? MATADORA confronts Latin American mythologies that make monsters of women’s suffering, and uses dance, physical theater, and visual culture to construct a new Latine archetype that refuses domestication. Opening Thursday September 24 at 7:30 p.m. and running through Saturday, September 26. Get tickets at the link in the linktr.ee in our bio!

Co-produced by Synapse Arts and presented in partnership with Chicago Latino Theatre Alliance’s DESTINOS–9th Chicago International Latino Theater Festival
