J D Z - BING DING 丙丁 | OCT 2026

The Bing Ding Wood Kiln, located in Qiancheng Village near Fuliang Jingdezhen China 浮梁景德镇潜城村, is a contemporary, award-winning, 1,800-square-meter facility completed in 2018 to revive traditional, 2,000-year-old wood-firing techniques. Designed by AZL Architects, it combines a functional egg-shaped brick kiln with a stunning concrete arch structure, acting as a "shrine" to craftsmanship and a popular cultural site.

Bing Ding International Wood-Firing Creation Camp 2026

14 - 29 OCTOBER | 16 Days Program
Wood-Firing Immersion

With utmost gratitude, we are back to Bing Ding again this fiery year for our wood firing adventure!

Apart from clay creation, the October program emphasizes hands-on wood-firing participation. Our artists will join the local wood firing team on a full firing schedule, taking part in every stage of the ceramic wood firing process. Mr. Yu Chen, owner of Bing Ding, who specializes in Designing, Building and also Kiln- Firing, will present us on the kiln’s history, architecture perspectives, and the technical principles behind the traditional egg- kiln.

Bonded by the grounding spirits of Earth and Fire, this residency program aims to connect our participants and instructors altogether in a very communal Chinese style that is warm, giving, and sharing.

*** IMPORTANT 💫💫💫

The 16-days program will take us from sculpting to the appreciation, understanding, and participation of JDZ traditional wood firing.

This residency program is only suitable for participants with intermediate or advanced ceramic skills who wish to explore independently with new clay materials in a new refreshing environment.

C H I NA - J D Z
Day 1 to 3

Arrived in Jingdezhen at the Traveling Ceramics Studio 吟游陶艺工作室, Thankful to Dabai 大白 for his welcome; the space, the equipment, and every person I meet here will all become precious parts of my memory.

By putting our thoughts and ideas into action, set us up closer to success. Thus, with everyone’s blessings and warmth in my heart, I set out on the 7th of January, 2026, to the city of porcelain. In this place that is both novel and unfamiliar, I try to feel and witness the various challenges I must face in the winter cold, adapting and balancing living and work, over the next twenty days, while continuing to pursue my creative direction and complete my works.
_____
Delightful for the warm rice and clay on the first day, 大白 guided me on his motorcycle through narrow lanes to get acquainted with the streets, staying area, and studio space. Most importantly, I have myself narrowed down to five kinds of clay materials to work with for the start.

After a simple experiment on the first day, I locked in the materials I would focus on for my creations on the second day. On the third day, I began the carving process and completed the quantity I had prepared on the first day. These achievements rest on the simple daily routine I’ve given myself. Thereafter, I needed to adjust for the tension in my muscles after labor, cracking skin on the tips of the fingers and lips, digestive regulation, and adaption to the cold.

Currently, I have tea, coffee, hot noodle soup, hot rice, erguotou (a Chinese white liquor), sunshine, clay, books, and the companionship of fellow potters.

Pushing my work forward with strength, quality and satisfaction. taken in 景德镇 Jingdezhen by @synceramic

L O A D E D /
U N L O A D E D | ✨️✨️✨️

These two months (Feb & March) have been the most intensely congested period of cup-making yet, and I’m still learning how to navigate it all.

The March school holiday family trip felt like a significant interruption to the production. It left my heart in deep dilemma — torn between my responsibilities to work, self-care, and family duties. But I love it! We had some precious fun 🫶

I’m still searching for wiser ways to resolve this inner conflict: if work could be easier with myself embracing unpredictability, accepting happenings, less over thinking and over seriousness, maybe I would dissolve and manage stress or saddness better.

Even so, the strongest reminder coming through these days is to SLOW DOWN.

To slow down even more. To feel my body, to create breathing spaces for appreciation. This message surfaced clearly while the group was carefully arranging the wares and setting up the display for our recent showcase. I was done, and felt really grateful with the various energy coming in to rework me and keeping me in place.

So to say, if I could create anything, I would wish for my work to inspire. Even if this is a lifetime assignment of repetition, I would still choose to load every piece with thoughtful gratitude — infusing it with perpetual strength and energy, then unloading blessings and love to those who receive them.
______

Go strong and stronger with love :)
Here i am, writing this post while on the way to Jingdezhen. Aside from our BLINDBOX and BLACK pieces, I am hoping for a new way to communicate, new works that spark joy, and also ways to see and execute things :)

Stay with me for more updates! 🫶

Navigation • Just Be

Looking at these pieces with fresher eyes, I’ve chosen to keep their rawness.
How often do we get to experience ceramic in its unglazed, uncoated state?

Some may find it prickly to the lips, less refined, less smooth.

But to me it feels like a brave step—going with the flow, meeting the work exactly as it is.
Raw and authentic.

I’m always searching for the next “right” step.
What if, for once, I simply stop overthinking and just be?

Breeze •

Keeping the rawness of the clay and the soft yellow-ochre radiance that emerges from the high fire, I want a quiet oceanic blue tones to brush over and for these works to carry a sense of ease and light-heartedness when approached.

For visitors to this coastal island who may take a piece home as a quiet memento of their time here,
and for those of us who live in the city—a gentle reminder to feel at ease when we return home to the people we love.

N A V I

Amid a busy schedule, I received an invitation from SOJAO to take part in their next Art Pop-Up.
As I weighed the timeline, I was reminded of a collection of works that have been quietly waiting—wrapped and resting in cartons—ready for their moment to be seen again.

These pieces were crafted in April. Unlike my usual process, they took a creative detour: sent straight to high fire and following a different path instead.

I’m presenting them in two series — Breeze · 如沐春风 and Navigation · Just Be.
_______
They will be available exclusively at the SOJAO Art Pop-Up this weekend.

I hope these pieces speak to you.

Mid way through the preparation of my entry for SOJAO Art Pop-up commencing this weekend, I found myself scrolling on the phone again, just because I was reminded by my mum that it's Mid-Autumn Festival and my mind simply wonders off to where we were last year at this similar period of the year.

Seated around the round table, we had a sumptuous meal before us, some were prepared on site at Bing Ding's in house kitchen, some were take-away from the Chinese restaurant nearby. Baijiu 白酒 Chinese white spirit to slurp, Big Cake in the middle because it's the Village Chief's (村长) Birthday,BBQ at the corner cause how can we not have the smell of burnt charcoal and smoke for celebration. High in the mountain we were by the way 🙈☀️🎤💯

I simply just want to reminisce about the moments but found myself downloading more pictures and refreshing the album again.

Looking forward to the shift in routine, changing atmosphere, changing air, new fun and just being in a new space with new people!

Looking forward to our next group trip to 丙丁柴窑 soon! by @synceramic

_____
Very real. Every attempt is a kind of remaking of myself, in order to break through. Perhaps to face those inner fears, anxieties, or layers of unease. Or simply to understand myself a little more. So I never set out to prove anything. I just cared too much — about creating, about moving forward, about the emotions and misunderstandings that had not yet been properly received. Without noticing, I allowed myself to stay under constant pressure.

At the venue, I saw so many familiar faces, yet regretfully, even those who had exchanged conversation with me many times and had long supported my work — I couldn’t quite remember their names accurately. I felt disappointed in myself for this. It was unexpected. What truly worries me is the possibility of mental decline, of memory fading.

I think I still care about others’ misunderstandings of me, about inaccurate descriptions. I care even more about the seeds planted by those misunderstandings. I fear carrying the emotional weight. When things do not go the way I hoped, I feel a kind of dislocation in time and space. These are things that can happen, and that have always affected me. Only now I am better at catching these feelings, and at recognizing my own limits and powerlessness. Then I return to the pottery practice I have built for myself, and continue working with care.

I look forward to going to JDZ when with everyone in October. I want to spend two solid weeks as a carefree wanderer — drinking every day, singing, just lying flat and doing nothing.

The balance between a sense of responsibility and a sense of ease
is so hard.

______

Some things must be discussed together, because the problem itself carries a relational dimension. No matter how clever one person is, they cannot untie the knot that belongs to “us.”

Some conflicts need not be confronted head-on in the moment. Time will slowly magnify a person’s persistence into a certain attitude toward life, even turning it into an exemplar in the eyes of others. This is not avoidance; it is transforming “confrontation” into “demonstration.”

Some decisions can be made alone, but stories that truly carry weight often need more people to shape them together—because value frequently arises in the process of being lived through collectively, not merely in the final result.

Like clouds and water in flow: rising from formlessness into myriad forms, an endless movement that is never fixed by any particular form. It adapts to the present situation, follows what is natural, and changes softly and ingeniously according to different circumstances.

Perhaps what we truly need is not more and more works, but those moments that allow us to interact, communicate, and listen to one another.

To turn the “unexpected” from disaster into surprise is, in essence, to shift life from a mindset of “completing tasks” to one of “allowing flow.” (something I need to learn and practice)

The most precious part of art has never been the form it is fixed into, but its ability to create encounters that cannot be designed in advance.

So what truly needs filtering may not be the quantity of work, but whether we leave space for the unexpected encounters to take place and happen. by @synceramic
