Art as a practice of subtraction.

If the mind is saturated with ambition, anxiety, and rigid definitions of outcome, it loses its capacity to receive. Rubin’s concept of the artist as a vessel relies on a subtractive discipline: clearing the internal space so the signal can land undisturbed.

True awareness is unmediated. It is the capacity to look at an object, a landscape, or a moment without immediately applying the clutter of language or judgment. When we empty the vessel of expectation, the mundane world reveals its quiet, extraordinary structure.
