Class starts in 12 days!

@demigaad is a multimedia artist working to build conversation, community, and resources for working-class people, organizing events around connection and curating sounds that center Black and brown experiences. For them, dance music is a tool for connecting with others and with one’s own body, a haven and a soft place in a dystopian world. At Sonic Resonance, they’re here to find community, grow their knowledge as a DJ, and have a great time.

@Fanonian is an artist and healer working in three words: demanding, surreptitious, voluntary. On the application, he actually answered our first question “Why does music matter to you?” with a question of his own: to what are we supposed to dance? At Sonic Resonance, he’s after good vibes, eternal friends, delicious meals from @yejinyoon, and an opportunity for conception.

@hirickyreyes is a lifelong musician, oral historian, and DJ whose practice is rooted in using sound for guardianship of community history and the ethic of “each one, teach one.” An open-format selector working primarily with analog tools, they connect seemingly disparate sounds through rhythm, interpolation, and shared lineage, having come up through @miyagirecordshop’s DJ classes, and now co-teaching that same class. For them, dance music is a living archive, passing down community stories through disco, house, and footwork rooted in the queer, Black, and immigrant communities that built refuge through invention. At Sonic Resonance, they’re after a continued sense of community where learning and teaching flow both ways, plus the push to grow from analog into digital tools like Ableton.

@1stpersoncj doesn’t separate the artist from the person: every step, every scene, from a late-night bus ride after a long shift to a sold-out show, is an unpremeditated stroke on that big canvas we all are fortunate enough to call life. Dance music is the one friend he can fully be themselves around, whether dancing, crying, or talking aloud, a way to converse with the God within, no matter how or even if the words come out audibly. At Sonic Resonance, he hopes to deepen his understanding of how music resonates with others and how to keep e by @synesthetyx

One of my favorite recurring events is when my grandmother gets excited about food. Most of the time she has no patience for me to cook with or even for her. Dumplings were another story… might pull up just to run that back. Maybe crawfish, ima have the cajun spice ready. by @synesthetyx

Guilt... I can’t help but feel that I failed you. At your memorial, as I watched the photos go by our friend said it felt like you were right there with us holding us through the grief of losing you. I felt your forgiveness too. You have such an amazing mind and heartwarming smile.

Hodari’s love was a cosmic love. The kind of love that plucks you out of loss into the spiritual plane. His compass was a north star. Thank you Hodari for blessing us with your vision and loving warmth. We all wish we were with you just once more. In your honor, I commit to journeying in the same direction you shared with me and so many other people. May Allah grant your spirit the highest of heavens, until we meet again. Hodari forever.

for the past hour now, folks have not been able to communicate with their family, journalists, or anyone in Gaza. Telecommunications companies are putting out statements confirming that their networks are down likely due to the heavy bombardment. I beg you to pay attention and to take action; my dms are open. Right now they have no voice.

July 2022 Aunt Del passed and in my family she had the sharpest tongue about injustice. I greatly miss her. taken in Washington, DC by @synesthetyx

what else could we be talking about right now besides how we are going to care for each other?

when we pulled up they were blasting water on water defenders in below freezing weather. the Dakota access pipeline has already leaked numerous times. warning before bombardment has the same effect as the leaking oil in water has the same effect as selective disinvestment in communities that produce the ghost blocks of Baltimore has the same effect as forced evictions of the batwa in the Congo. rituals of settler necropolitics.

hopkins school of medicine administrators have just asked us to be intentionally civil with respect to the diversity of our institution while poorer darker skinned folks in surrounding east baltimore are actively being removed. we are in a moment of impossible calculus: people are dispersing themselves across multiple buildings with the hopes that at least some family survives the likely augmentation of 4,000 tonnes of bombs in the span of 7 days. in one fell swoop admin promotes deathly silence on two different parts of the globe. taken in Baltimore Running Festival by @synesthetyx
