That aside. I have a weird relationship with Final Fantasy VII. As someone who at 17 in 1997, got a shit job just to save and then walk my ass to a local game store to buy a PS1 and this game, I do have to say I do love it. But also, as an adult in 2026, with my critical hat on, a lot of the game is kind of broken and a lot of concepts there didn’t really work, as well as the triple graphic designs.
So it falls a bit down on my ranking.

That being said again. I believe Final Fantasy VII is the most *important* Final Fantasy game. Just like its grandfather original, it helped propel a genre into newer heights. Especially in the West. Everyone I knew, literally almost everyone, in school knew of this game. Whether gamer or not. They knew Cloud and his big sword. Every dude had saw the summon animations. We all knew about Aerith. It was something that at the time stuck me as this phenomenon. But then it quietly faded.

So far I’m really enjoying the Remake. Has just enough nostalgia and new stuff for me. I know there’s discourse around the ending and I’ve honestly been able to avoid spoilers. But regardless, I’m having fun . Game is good.

As for VII as a whole being mid or the greatest thing ever? Well, I say, just play video games 🤷🏻‍♂️

Casino Kid is a gambling, sport, rpg hybrid, adapted from the Japanese version of $1,000,000 Kid : Maboroshi no Teiou Hen. Which is itself based off the manga of the same name.

Released by SOFEL in 1989, the game follows the titular kid as he works to defeat the “Evil King of the Casino”. You work your way through the lower members of his squad much in the way of Triple Triad or Scott Pilgram.

Unfortunately the English release cut many features including Slots and Roulette. Though the Blackjack and Poker games remain true. The character was changed to have blonde hair instead of blue and a lot of locations and names were changed for license reasons. (Golden Crumbs instead of Golden Nugget for example). The biggest change however came with the cutting of the ability to travel to different cities and different casinos. The main casino hub remains where you can practice your skills, learn new strategies and talk to the “bunny girls” for tips and secrets.

An English release only sequel was made a few years later, but I’ll save that for another post. I also won’t even go into Wallstreet Kid yet 😝

It may seem I’m hating on the translation but I really do love them both. Casino Kid was one of those random games I got as a kid, cause what 10 year old doesn’t like gambling ? And it stuck with me all these years as this bizarro combination of genres.

Returned home Saturday from a week long work trip. My last one for the season. But not course, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t find a way to get sick 😆 So I’ve been quarantined in bed for the last 3 days with severe flu. It’s been rough. Today is the first day I’ve been able to get up and move around. That being said, I’m still going to be resting a day or 2 more. So that means video games ! 😂

I feel like Falcom is the best kept secret in jrpg history. I know the modern Trails games are popular and Ys has been getting its due since VIII, but their back catalogue and other series they have seem to always be just under the radar. Or at the least someone will play a game and love it and not realize it’s the same company. I’m not going to go into all the history or hidden gems or what have you, here and now, but there’s a lot out there if you’re curious.

I’m going to focus instead on this recent release of Y’s Memoire : the Oath in Felghana. This is an enhanced edition of Oath in Felghana that was released in 2010 for PSP. Which is in turn, a remake of Ys III Wanderers from Y’s. It’s complicated.

Luckily you don’t have to think too much about it and I love these games for the way you can dive into any of them and be able to enjoy a solid stand alone experience.

This one is actually my favorite, tied with Memories of Celceta. It’s typical action rpg fair but the controls are right, the music and presentation are spot on and it has such a gran adventure feel to it. Nothing too serious. Think Grandia or Lunar. This version has enhanced music and graphics but you can also switch back to the originals which I wish more games let you do. This Refined Edition came with postcards, cloth art, the soundtrack as well as acrylic figures. It even has a manual and adventure guide. They don’t make em like this anymore folks. Pictured here with the game is an oral history of the creation of Y’s. I picked it up at BEEP in Akihabara when I was last in Tokyo. A good read.

Seeing a lot of these, so I’ll join in.
First game of 2025 down. Well, technically. I did complete one route 😆 Have been playing this off and on since mid December. Having to travel so much this time of year for work helps give me burst times for handheld stuff. Laying in hotel beds and shooting my shot with the classmates of Kirameki Private School. I was able to get Rhythmy Kyono to be my waifu of sorts. I think it was the constant wearing of headphones she does that did it for me 😝 The game is standard Tokimemo affair but with all the pluses from 1&2 dialed up and the jank from 3 toned down or non existent. It’s a shame the original series didn’t continue on after this as being a handheld game seems the best way to play. Just look at the Girls Side games. I’m hoping the remake of the original gets a Western release and opens up a whole new audience. Give us more of these Konami! I would rank this one as tied with the original as my favorite. I’ll definitely be revisiting through the year to try other routes and hidden things I know I missed. Happy Sunday all 🖤✌️
