The New York City MetroCard was introduced by the MTA in 1993, changing the way millions of New Yorkers paid for public transportation.

The familiar yellow card was created as part of the MTA’s transition to a computerized fare system. Instead of paying with cash at a subway turnstile, riders could swipe their MetroCard and have their fare electronically deducted.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the MetroCard became an everyday part of New York City life. It was used across the subway and bus system, eventually becoming available in different formats including Pay-Per-Ride cards and Unlimited Ride cards.

The MetroCard also became part of New York culture itself. Over the years, the MTA released thousands of specially designed cards featuring celebrities, musicians, athletes, movies, television shows, holidays, landmarks, major events and important moments in New York history.

Some of the most memorable MetroCards became collectibles, especially cards connected to legendary New York figures and cultural icons.

By the 2000s and 2010s, the MetroCard was so recognizable that the simple act of swiping one became an unmistakable symbol of living in New York City.

After more than three decades, the MetroCard era is coming to an end as the MTA transitions the entire system to OMNY, its contactless payment system.

For generations of New Yorkers, the MetroCard wasn’t just something you used to get on the train.

It became one of the most recognizable pieces of everyday New York culture. 🚇🗽
