Join us for 2 Environment Storytelling CNY events this October in collaboration with @suartmuseum

Oct 3: Rochele Royster will lead a hands on Community
Day workshop that invites participants to explore how mending and reuse can help us reimagine
our relationships with the materials we consume, keep, discard, and transform. Bring an old, worn, torn, or stained piece of clothing. Don’t have your own? We’ll provide textiles you can use!

Oct. 29: Visual artist Rodney Ewing and Professor Delali Kumavie will explore the stories carried by objects and landscapes—including
histories of migration, displacement, consumption, and technological change—and consider how
artistic practices of reclaiming and reimagining materials can challenge conventional distinctions
between waste and value, disposal and renewal. The conversation will discuss the intersections of
race, technology, ecology, material culture, and the Black experience.

Both events are associated with SU Art Museum’s current exhibition: Reclaim: The Art of Recology. Learn more via link in bio.

Introducing the 2026–27 EHN Engaged Communities Projects!

The Engaged Humanities Network is excited to welcome a new cohort of Engaged Communities projects bringing Syracuse University faculty, students, community organizations, educators, practitioners, and residents together around shared work across Central New York.

EHN’s Engaged Communities program supports sustained, reciprocal collaborations that connect university resources with community knowledge, priorities, and expertise. This year’s projects demonstrate the many forms that engaged scholarship can take—from community health and family support to refugee foodways and place-making; from veterans’ poetry and to feminist pedagogy, rural community resilience, and participatory approaches to nutrition research.

Swipe through to meet the collaborators and learn more about each project. We’re excited to support their work and to share the relationships, resources, and public work that grow from these collaborations.

We’re excited to introduce the EHN’s Fall 2026 Engaged Courses, bringing community-engaged learning into classrooms across Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition and Human Development and Family Science.

The EHN’s Engaged Courses program provides cohort-based support to instructors across departments who are integrating community-engaged learning into new and existing courses. Each course creates opportunities for students to apply their knowledge and skills to serve the public good through collaborations with community partners.

This fall’s courses are:

WRT 302: Emerging Media and Public Impact
Patrick W. Berry, Associate Professor
Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition

HFS 325: Children and Families in Healthcare Settings
Colleen Cameron, Professor of Practice
Human Development and Family Science

WRT 115: Writing, Rhetoric, and the Environment
Trevor Bleick, Graduate Student
Writing Studies, Rhetoric, and Composition

Across these courses, students will engage in public-facing work around digital storytelling, pediatric health literacy, and environmental communication—connecting the knowledge and practices of their disciplines with communities, collaborators, and questions beyond the classroom.

Swipe through to meet the instructors and learn more about each course—and stay tuned for four more Engaged Courses coming in Spring 2027!

Celebrating the 7th annual Narratio Fellowship Performance at the @metmuseum !

The evening featured poetry and music by the 2026 Narratio Fellowship cohort, accompanied by oud player Bahar Badiei. Drawing inspiration from objects in The Met’s Ancient West Asian collection, fellows performed original poems exploring memory, migration, identity, and belonging.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this remarkable performance!

And a very special thank you to our wonderful partners @metancient @metteens @metobjectsconservation @metmusicalinstruments @syracuse.ehn taken in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York by @syracuse.ehn

Stopped by to catch this year’s Narratio Fellows rehearsing before they head to @MetMuseum next week. @Narratio_org got its start right here — a partnership between @SyracuseU, the North Side Learning Center, and the Met — to give young refugees a powerful platform to tell their own stories, in their own words. Grateful for Professor Brice Nordquist’s steady leadership, and for @syracuseNSLC, @syracuse.ehn, and @suartsciences or opening doors for these students. Proud doesn’t begin to cover it. taken in Syracuse University by @syracuse.ehn

Join us for the 7th Annual Narratio Fellowship Performance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Friday, July 31, 6-7pm in André Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments, Gallery 681. The performance will feature a new 2026 cohort of Narratio Fellows and renowned oud player Bahar Badiei.

Drawing inspiration from objects in The Met’s Ancient West Asian collection, fellows have created original poems exploring memory, migration, identity, and belonging. Through the interplay of spoken word and the rich musical traditions of the oud, these performances invite audiences into stories that connect cultures, generations, and places across the globe.

The Narratio Fellowship is a year-long arts and storytelling program for refugee and immigrant youth based in Syracuse, NY. The Fellowship supports young people in developing original creative work across poetry, film, photography, music, and visual art. Through mentorship, artistic collaboration, and public performance, Narratio cultivates the next generation of cultural leaders while amplifying stories that expand public understandings of migration, identity, and belonging.

Thanks to our amazing collaborators for the constant support and guidance! @syracusenslc @mesopotami @edward.grattan @metmusicalinstruments @metmuseum @stefanosphotos

We’re excited to share a new visual for the Engaged Humanities Network, created by artist and longtime collaborator @evanbode

Evan has contributed his creativity and care to multiple EHN-affiliated projects over the years, including @teens_with_a_movie_camera , @mend_syracuse , and @writeoutsyr . This visual emerges from the same spirit of collaboration, relationship-building, and collective imagination that animates our work together.

The design is inspired by a passage from Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail: “We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”

Across his speeches and sermons, King returned often to this image of a garment woven from our interdependence. Evan’s design brings that metaphor to life through a patchwork of interconnected pieces joined by a continuous thread.

The image captures what the EHN strives to be: not a single program or project, but a consistent thread of mutual support connecting scholars, students, artists, educators, community leaders, and practitioners across many fields and backgrounds in pursuit of more inclusive, interconnected, and just communities and institutions.

We’re grateful to Evan for helping us visualize this shared commitment!
