Yesterday, members of the Syracuse Police Department joined Mayor Sharon Owens, and several first responders for the dedication of the Michael Jensen Wall of Heroes, at the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Management.

Mayor Owens, Syracuse Police Chief Mark Rusin, and former Police Chief Joe Cecile all spoke during the ceremony, reflecting on the importance of remembering those who gave their lives in service to others and ensuring their legacies are forever lasting.

Officer Michael Jensen’s sacrifice will forever be part of the Syracuse Police Department’s history. This memorial serves as a lasting tribute to Michael, and to all the fallen first responders whose courage, dedication and service continue to inspire us.

This was a beautiful tribute and we are proud to be part of this community that continues to honor and support its first responders. by @syracusepolice

A coordinated response involving Syracuse Police, the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) detail, the Onondaga County Probation, and New York State Parole resulted in the arrest of two individuals following reports of multiple shots fired in the area of Palmer Avenue.

With assistance from the Sheriff's Office Air 1 helicopter, officers located both individuals and took them into custody without further incident.

The semi-automatic handgun shown was recovered during the investigation. Both individuals were charged with multiple firearm related offenses and lodged.

This incident exemplifies the importance of coordinated police work and strong partnerships in addressing gun violence and keeping our community safe. by @syracusepolice

Following the continued success of the School Zone Traffic Enforcement (SZTE) program, the City of Syracuse will activate ten school zone speed cameras to help keep students, families, and neighborhoods safe. A 30‑day warning period begins November 1 at the listed locations.

During this time, drivers who exceed posted school‑zone speed limits will receive warning notices only.

After the warning period ends, speeding violations will result in a $50 fine (set by New York State). A $25 late penalty will apply to unpaid fines. Citations will be mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner. Signs are posted in all enforcement areas to alert motorists of camera use.

Please slow down, stay alert, and help us keep our school communities safe. by @syracusepolice

October 28th marks National First Responders Day.

It's a day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand. First responders dedicate themselves to saving lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis in order to help others.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities they live in. They are firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians and paramedics. In an emergency, they're the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line. We thank them today, and everyday. by @syracusepolice

On Friday, members of the Syracuse Police Department along with City of Syracuse personnel participated in a blind immersion experience at One Park Place, hosted by Aurora of CNY.

Using blindfolds, canes, and sighted guides, participants navigated their surroundings while experiencing firsthand how much we rely on our vision and other senses to move through the world. The experience was a reminder of how often we take our sight for granted and how important accessibility, awareness, and understanding are in supporting our neighbors.

Thank you Aurora of CNY for providing this profound learning experience. We encourage everyone to consider participating in an experience like this. It can change your perspective, build empathy, and help us become a more understanding and inclusive community.
