Kanyaka mariyam innal (Syriac) || Yeldho Perunnal

Blessed Yeldho Lent to all my brethren in Christ ❤️

Let us prepare and keep a manger in our hearts always; humble and welcoming to God. Let us joyfully open the door to our hearts which He knocks at. May He who humbled himself for our sakes, though was rejected by his own people find home in us. May He who should’ve been adorned with the most precious ornaments be adorned with our praises forevermore.

"If upon Satan are laid the hands of ordination to the priesthood, and if he breaks the holy elements, they are valid for me and I receive [them] from him. And thus it is considered by me to be like that which Simon Peter broke and nothing is lacking from it!” - St. Philoxenos of Mabbug, 'Memra on the Faith by Questions' by @syrianorthodox

"And I believe that He gave to Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and what he binds on earth will be bound in heaven, and what he loosens on earth will be loosened in heaven. And I believe that this grant is to-day yet with those who are high priests in truth." - St. Jacob Baradaeus ♰ 'Confession of Jacob Baradaeus'

"But did our Lord eat from His body or not? We say that He ate from it, and drank from His blood, for He said: 'I shall nor drink again of this fruit of the wine with you' [Mk. 14:25; Mt. 26;29]. Mar Aprem says: 'His disciples ate His body, and He [also] ate with them; and they drank His blood and He (also) drank with them. Similarly, Mar Ivanios [St. John Chrysostom] says: He tasted and gave to His disciples. And Jacob of Edessa says that truly He ate from His body and drank from His blood. The patriarch Kuriakos [of Takrit] and Moses Bar Kepha taught that He ate from His body and drank from His blood." - St. Dionysius Yac'ub bar Salibi ♰ 1171, Commentary on the Holy Qurbono

"Everything in the Church is consecrated, completed and perfected by the Cross: holy chrism, baptism, communion, ordinations, altars, sanctuaries, prayer houses and others. As Mor Severus the Patriarch and Œcumenical doctor said in his homily on the Cross, the Cross consecrates the new birth from baptism, completes and perfects the sacrifice which is rational and bloodless and all the service of priesthood and holy ministry. Why is everything in the Church consecrated and perfected by the Cross? Because the Cross portrays Christ Who consecrates all and is not Himself consecrated. Despite the presence of other symbols of Christ in the Church, it is through the Cross that the whole economy was completed. Through it, we received salvation and deliverance." - Mor Severios Moshe bar Kepha ♰ 903

Shlomo

On Sunday October 31st it is "Qudosh Idto", which is the beginning of the Liturgical Year of our beloved Syriac Orthodox Church of Antioch.

To help everyone stay up to date with our Syriac Orthodox Church events, we are sharing this online calendar based on the Liturgical Calendar of our Antiochian Church. Note: In 2022 the Syriac dioceses of Malankara and their diaspora will be celebrating Easter one week earlier than the Syriac dioceses in the Near East and their diaspora. This online calendar follows the Gregorian dates for all movable feasts, ie Easter on April 17 & Pentecost on June 5th of 2022 respectively.

We believe this is the most detailed and exhaustive Syriac Church Calendar available online. The calendar has been fully updated till the end of 2022 and it is updated on a regular basis with new information as time permits. You can sync this public calendar with your email account and mobile devices, all updates will be automatically synchronized.

The online calendar features all the major Feasts of our Church. Fasting seasons currently in vogue with the fasting dates listed as established by the Holy Synod and the guidance promulgated in Patriarchal encyclicals are likewise indicated. Additionally, the feasts of St. Mary the Theotokos, the commemorations of the Holy Apostles, Biblical figures, and various other saints & prelates throughout time have been added. Likewise, important historical episodes of our Holy Church from her blessed and glorious memory are included. Metropolitan consecration anniversaries and other more recent events round out the collection.

I humbly remind everyone that I'm but a layman, with no formal theological background, and no knowledge of the Syriac language at the time of publishing this introduction. Naturally, these limitations will therefore amplify the possibility of errors. I seek forgiveness for all errors. They are never intentional.

Tonight at Vespers is the commencement of the 3 day Fast of Nineveh (sawmo d-ninwoyé tlotho yaumin) according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara.

May our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ abundantly bless all the faithful who wholeheartedly keep the Fast. May we use this blessed period as a time of reflection & repentance.

"Nineveh is a type of the nations. Jonah did not desire [to go to Nineveh] i.e. for the prophets were not sent to the nations and it was not the custom.

And now: the rationale for what [is written]:

The ship is a type of the synagogue. The sea [is a type] of the world. The sailors [are a type] of the prophets. Jonah [is a type] of our Lord.

The lots etc. are on account of there being no salvation in the death of others - except on account of our Lord. The interrogation by the sailors is like the interrogation by the chief priests.

... The three days are like the three days that our Lord was in the grave. The prayer of Jonah is a figure of the preaching in Sheol. The vomiting forth from the fish is a figure of the Resurrection. The journey afterwards is a figure of the journey of the apostles to the nations."

- St. Dionysius Yac'ub bar Salibi ♰ 1171, Spiritual Commentary on the book of Jonah by @syrianorthodox

January 1st is the commemoration of the Feast of the Circumcision of our Lord Jesus (Hido d'gzoorto d'Moran Yeshu), the dukhrono of All Holy Fathers & Doctors of the Church with St. Basil & St. Gregory of Nyssa (dukhrono abohotho qadishe wmalfone d'ito wad Mor Baselios u Mor Gregorios d'nawsa) and New Year of the Lord (rish shato mshihoyto)!

"If then one wishes to gain some benefit from the new moon, do this; when you see the year ending, thank the Lord, because He had led you into this cycle of years." - St. John Chrysostom ♰ 407, on the Kalends of January

“Again, we say that Christ was circumcised in order to give us baptism, which typified and referred to circumcision. And without the circumcision of the flesh, there was no way (for Christ) to give us the true circumcision, which is baptism. Since circumcision is mutilation of the flesh that overlaid the genital organ like a cover, baptism is the mutilation of the [old] man of sin which is overlaid on the heart like a cover, making the one who is baptized a new man, and the son of the heavenly Father, and brother of Christ.” – Excerpt from Mor Severios Moshe Bar Kepha ♰ 903, Commentary on St. Luke 2:21

For who in our generation, O Holiness, stands upon his spiritual watch and is divinely lifted upon the rock of hope in Christ, firm and unshakable, and teaches purely the divine mysteries in the likeness of the blessed and holy Fathers like the venerable person of Your Holiness, so watchful and solicitous? Or again, who now among the high-priests, the great servants and ministers of God, is reckoned like yourself to have prepared and encompassed for himself all the spiritual virtues that manifest symbolically the variety and the excellence of the blessed high-priest Aaron’s entire vesture, redolent as a type of priestly service? For the many memorable struggles on behalf of the fear of God that you have fought for so long, no less than our venerable Fathers, I do not address now, but refrain from discussing, lest I be found doing something other than what is appointed to our solicitude.

Looking therefore to the great help of God and to Your Holiness’s concord and communion, whence I derive indomitable vigilance, I accept fervently the governance of the holy church and assume, I know not by what inscrutable counsels of God’s judgments, the office of her stewardship, now that our Father Timothy, worthy of holy memory, has departed from us. Following in the footsteps of the paternal laws, I compose this letter ordered to peace and concord, which by custom is called “synodical,” and at the same time notify Your Holiness of the position in which I am placed and, again, at the same time demonstrate unity and communion with you concerning the faith.

- Synodical Letter from Pope St. Theodosius of Alexandria to Patriarch St. Severus of Antioch by @syrianorthodox
