POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Helluva weekend. Drove back down to Cali on Friday, crashed with buddies in Oakland, and then made my way to Dublin to work on the mural for King Kong Comics with @itsdavelaw and @phillipginnartist . And no AC in the car. So that ride through Davis and Sac was really fun! Not really! I just had to imagine I was Max traversing the post-apocalyptic wastelands looking for water and fuel. But hell, we finished the mural and it turned out awesome!

And JOAN's campaign is now at 84%! My goal was to hit 75% by Friday and it's definitely exceeded that! Let's see if I can get to 95% before the end of next week!!!!!!! Let's make it happen!!!!!

Crowdfunding link in bio! Or if you're on FB, go to the cover photo post!

"Shinji meets the Great Dragon"

This post is a dedication to this punk. You whine when I give you wet food because you want the dry food, meow until the sun goes down and then some to take you out for a walk, and you won't play with the toy feather anymore because you prefer more sophisticated play because the feather toy is now beneath you. Yes, mom and I secretly and unfairly judge, "why can't you be more like your sister, JiaYi???". Because she is less demanding and is happy to play with and eat anything that we give her.

Yet, I still love you. Pre-cat, my life was pretty self serving. Especially during COVID. A connection to something, someone was all we needed. We're pack animals, we can't live in isolation forever. Maybe a family of my own was what I needed. And two years ago, in some random parking lot in San Leandro, you appeared. There was all the uneasy challenges that came with being a first time pet parent, but once you figure out what their true personalities are and what they really need it gets easier. Because what they really want is to feel safe and loved. A cat's best friend and companion is you.

Love ya, Shinji (the Punk!)

JOAN: VOL 3 is still in the works. The writing and roughs just got the approval of editor @innerdemonent and now I'm in the clean up phase.

Aiming for a crowdfunding campaign around early summer next year.

It's been a solid 8years working on this series. And looking forward to another 2 years to complete the tale in volume 4. It'll be a total of 10 years on this project!

In an era of AI, Amazon Prime shipping, and lightning fast streaming services, it almost seems insane that anyone spends so much time on anything.

And if JOAN was just an economic venture, I'd be rabid hungry to pitch it to Hollywood, to videogames studios, and toy companies.

But the whole thing is a spiritual journey. One part a philosophical meditation on the art life and the other an exercise in auteurship.

Of course, I'm open to opportunities, but after the books are done. Gotta stay focused on the main task at hand.

Or what editor, Robert once said, "CRAFT first; PRODUCT second."

Alright, back to the drawing board!

--------JOAN SYNOPSIS-------

An action-packed, hardboiled revenge tale inspired by Joan of Arc.

Betrayed by the French...burned alive by the English...resurrected for revenge by God!

Enchanted with immortality and blessed with infinite ammo, Joan of Arc is back, hunting down those who wronged her! Join the Rebel of Orleans as she blows away cinema-loving kings, superhuman sorcerers, a K-POP assassin, and her arch nemesis - King Henry - in this loving homage to 80’s / 90’s action films, Quentin Tarantino, and the balletic violence of Asian cinema.

If you enjoy the adrenaline-fueled, martial arts action of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Deadly Class, check out JOAN today.

Bullets will fly and swords will clash until King Henry is dead and medieval France is at peace once more!

Table Q25

----------------

Meanwhile, I'm exhausted. Came back right after SNAFU Con to wrap up any last minute production work with JOAN: VOL 3...which I can happily say is off to the printers!

It's been a hectic week. Most of it was spent going back and forth with the amazing people at Comic Impressions where they helped me figure out how to get the books printed the way I want. Truly grateful for them. But I'm gonna be honest, it's been exhausting.

Being an indie artist and comic creator is akin to running a small business, which I still haven't fully accepted. It still feels like I'm pretending and at any moment I'll have to give up this life. I don't like having that feeling, but it's truly how I feel.

But it beats some of the challenges I've had in the past with other careers that don't see value I bring to the table. It's why I went the independent route. I wasn't waiting on someone to bet on me, I was betting on myself.

So if you're ever doubting yourself, think about how you're just adding to the doubts others give you. Have the belief and stay persistent. This is the way!

Tried rewatching this with @mchunton and her 9-11 year-old kids and we totally forgot how violent Princess Mononoke is. First fifteen minutes heads and limbs are taken off. Two of the young ones walked off. Lol. I get it.

I'll have to finish it another time!

================

JOAN

Set in an alternative 1430’s Europe, the tyrannical King Henry and his legion of lethal Sorcerers have suppressed the nation with their oppressive ONE THOUGHT. With no heroes left to face this Orwellian nightmare, JOAN OF ARC IS RESURRECTED FROM THE DEAD to save the day. Enchanted with IMMORTALITY and INFINITE AMMO, the Outlaw Saint is back to save the innocent and to dismantle the monarchy once and for all.

JOAN is a 6-part graphic novel series set in an alternative 1430’s medieval France. It is a hodgepodge of genres, put together in one unique, stylish, action-packed comic book casserole: spaghetti westerns, 80’s/90’s films of John Woo, Tarantino, and Robert Rodriguez, anime (Ninja Scroll and Samurai Champloo), and comics (Blade of the Immortal).

I think all of you should start something of your own. Like making a comic book for example. Write and draw. And if you can't draw, see if someone is willing to collaborate or be a work for hire. Then figure out how much it costs to print it. Afterwards, find a convention or two to promote it. Get used to developing your pitch, hone in on your customer interaction, adapt what is useful, and reject what is not.

And yes, think of money, but let that be just a tool
See what happens when you treat this project as more of a message, than entrepreneurship. It's easy in this world to put things in economic terms, but try just for a second see what happens when you think of building an audience as more of a connection-based endeavor.

This life is a good one, but only if you're committed to it. Only if you understand who you are and what you're bringing to this world. I used to think the guy or girl who was physically the strongest was tough, nah, it's the person with mental fortitude. No matter what, they keep pushing.

And this strength and confidence happens when you tackle and accomplish your first project. You have to see it all the way through. This is how you can define failure and success on your own terms.

This is the way.
