In my early years I always feared that I was different. But it took me a while to figure out why that was. Sitting at the lunch tables in elementary school or waiting in line at the grocery store. I knew that I felt different. And it wasn’t just in my head either. I could see it in the eye rolls of cashiers listening to my moms broken English and I could hear it in the voice of my classmate telling me she didn’t want me to sit at her table because my food “smells weird”.

It took until high school for me to start feeling confident in my own skin. Being mixed always made me feel like I was too Hispanic to be White and too White to be Hispanic. Trapped in a nowhere land contemplating my choice on the “what race do you identify as?” question.

I was fortunate enough to spend most of my summers in Colombia growing up, and it is where I continue to have the most fond childhood memories—ones which leave an ache in my heart to this day. The slide in the first picture was my favorite playground growing up, it was right down the block from my families apartment in Bogotá. I was actually convinced it was mine when I was younger according to my Abuela.

It’s important more than ever for Hispanic voices to be heard right now as we continue to see our brothers and sisters kidnapped or murdered in the street. Listen to our voices, hear our stories, turning away in silence does nothing but make you as blind as those who kill us in the street.
