Let’s see how this goes. 2024 has been one hell of a journey. Quitting a job young me would have given anything to do, to starting my own expedition company from the ground up. This video is a playback of the highs and lows that shaped my path. It’s a reminder to keep chasing bigger dreams. Now it’s your turn—what expeditions or treks are you looking forward to in 2025? @sonysingapore #alphacreators6 #sonyalphasg by @t.hwq
Comment ‘Get up and go’ if you want to join a community that’s always ready to explore! Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to go on Expeditions, but there aren’t a lot of opportunities in Singapore. At The Outside, we’re making mountaineering and trekking accessible for everyone through training, coaching, and unforgettable guided expeditions. 🌍 Swipe through to learn how it all started and why we’re passionate about this journey. by @t.hwq
I got invited to do another talk! This one at ACRES, sharing about the anti-poaching ranger course. But I ended up learning a lot more than I shared. Most of what I know about conservation has been from the frontlines in South Africa. Rangers on the ground, dealing with poachers, protecting wildlife, disrupting things at the source. It was amazing to share my story with the staff and volunteers of ACRES, who are doing amazing work to protect the wildlife scene in Singapore. Kalai was gracious enough to give me a tour around their facility. Showing the animals that they have rescued and are taking care of over the years of operation. It gave me a different perspective on wildlife protectors. This is the other end of the route, where wildlife ends up as illegal pets, where injured animals get picked up, where the consequences of that entire chain of poaching show up in Singapore’s shipping ports. I never knew that we had such a dedicated team of animal protectors in Singapore. It’s incredible to see how wildlife protection efforts link together across countries and people. Massive respect for the work ACRES is doing, especially with their upcoming expansion and Gala dinner! Hope to be back soon! by @t.hwq
Went down to speak at the Royal Geographical Society Singapore last week! Still not super used to the whole public speaking thing, but you guys made it really easy. Super kind crowd, lots of good questions, and just a really nice mix of people doing their own adventures or just curious to hear more. Also realised I still owe a few of you replies from after the session. If I haven’t gotten back to you, just drop me a message. Thanks for coming down to listen to my time training with anti-poaching rangers. And thanks to the @rgs_sg for inviting me to do this and putting it all together. Will post a supercut of the talk tomorrow. by @t.hwq
Was on radio with CNA938 recently. Heart still panics a little when I say it out loud hah. It’s been about a year since starting The Outside, and this was one of those moments where I actually had to slow down and think back on everything that’s happened. From the early days figuring things out, to now being able to share about the expeditions we’re running this year, and more importantly, the conservation teams we get to work alongside. The kind of expeditions that aren’t just an adventure, but also something meaningful for the conservation community. A lot of this usually just lives in my head or comes up in small conversations, so it was nice to pause and reflect a bit. Also didn’t expect how natural the whole conversation felt. I was super nervous to say something dumb on live radio hahah should have seen my Garmin heart rate spike. But once it started, it just felt like chatting about things I care about, with someone genuinely curious about it. Going to break the interview up into shorter clips over the next few days. Still editing everything, but will start sharing soon! Huge thank you to the CNA team and Cheryl for chatting with me before the segment to make it seem more chill haha really really helped! by @t.hwq
Misogi challenge ideas for personal growth. Mine have escalated over time. The important part isn’t how extreme it looks. It’s whether it’s genuinely hard for you. Don’t compare your hard to someone else’s. Pick something you care about. Pick something that would change you. by @t.hwq
It’s a bit crazy, but… what the heck, it was damn sick. 15hrs up and down. -20 degrees summit push. Climbing up vertical ice walls (I don’t think it was that steep… but the team says it was). Couldn’t have asked for anything more. Island Peak has been on my list for the last three years. Somehow it always fell through for whatever reasons. When I started @gotheoutside , this was the very first expedition I wrote down. Feels great that it finally happened, and still kind of amazed that five other people were crazy enough to follow. Now that we’re almost a year into running The Outside, it’s wild how fast this all went. Got some mad plans for next year, and really grateful seeing the community grow. No idea how long we can keep this up, but I’m enjoying every bit of it while I can. Special thanks to the mrs for the two birthday surprises. Way too shag in the moment to fully process it (you can literally hear it in the third video) by @t.hwq
when we were all fresh and optimistic before the -15°C winds bitch-slapped us at 5895m 😮‍💨 by @t.hwq
So we did a talk on wildlife photography at @theoutdoorfair this year! Oh blessings that was a hard one… It’s my first time seeing my own pictures blown up so big like this! Have a lot to improve in public speaking… but massive thank you for all of you that came down! The cheer at the introduction helped so much :”) Wildlife photography is something I wouldn’t say I’m extremely pro at. Still learning every time I pick up a camera! The goal is always to be a @natgeo photographer someday, so I guess I’m on that path (I hope) May or may not do a post using all the slides I made. But not sure if I wanna do a voiceover or something because the slides are quite minimalistic! Also biggest thank youto @outsidesg and @theoutdoorfair for the trust. 2026? Finally hit my first 6000m summit. Been a long time coming (maybe even a little too long). I’ve spent so much time at 5000m that I forgot what thinner air at new altitude feels like. This one hits different. There were plenty of moments where we almost called it. Days of non-stop rain at base camp, legs fried from not using trekking poles the whole way up (regret of the year, I’m now a pole convert), and the minor body illness/aches/discomforts that makes every step feel like hell. But we kept going. Was the summit magical? Not really. I was way too tired to process it in the moment. Still looking back wondering how the hell we found the willpower to keep climbing up (and back down, oh bless). But yeah, this one means a lot. And it’s only the beginning! Got snippets to share from this journey over the next few days. (Major shoutout to my partner, an absolute beast in the mountains.) by @t.hwq
What if conservation wasn’t about plastic bottles and styrofoam boxes? About a year ago I embarked on one of the wildest adventures I’ve ever been on. An anti-poaching ranger course with ProTrack anti-poaching unit. 45 Days in the South African bush. We were out there patrolling reserves, removing snares, and even conducting a rhino autopsy. No data connection, 60kg on my back, and long days in the wild. But where else will you get to live in Big 5 territory? It was a crazy experience. Easily one of my most memorable I wrote an article about my full experience on TTI. Link is in my bio if you’re interested! by @t.hwq
This is what happens when you don’t have data connection in the mountains by @t.hwq
