I moved to NYC almost 40 years ago. Folks come here for many reasons: school, job, art, the people, things that turn your head daily and the food. I came for all of the above. Caputos Bakery was one of those neighborhood institutions that affirmed your decision. Bread baked daily: Italian bread, rustic loafs, dinner rolls, prosciutto bread, pizza dough, etc. - all of it great. And the price was good too. It was the place where if you were in striking distance if you knew what was good for you, you’d make the detour. Showing up at a friend’s or gathering with a Caputos loaf showed that you care. For the Holidays sometimes I’d bring a loaf of their prosciutto bread to Michigan. Few baked goods can make me weep. This was one. Caputos wasn’t ruined by influencers. The only problem is I took it for granted, thinking it’ll be in Brooklyn longer than me, after all it’s been going for 124 years. Today I read, out of the blue, after five generations, they closed shop. Sad, but a reminder of another reason I moved to NYC - nothing stays the same. by @t.s.naylor

Say hello to my new tenant, Pacita. She comes back every Spring for the last three years. Last year she built a nest but no eggs - like she was trying to hatch some “phantom eggs”. Eventually she gave up the ghost and flew the coop. This year, perhaps in a state of mummy brain, built a nest on my bike seat. Last night I scared her away while I was doing some work on the deck and lo behold - I discovered two eggs in the nest. Now I’ve been told if I touch the nest, she may never come back. It was relocation or not bike this Spring. So carefully I moved the nest to a pot on top of our storage shed and surrounded it with other objects giving her a fortress point of view. I emptied the garbage and when I came back ten minutes later, she’d resumed her incubatory duties. I’ll keep ya’ll posted. Rats be warned, we’ll protect her at all costs. by @t.s.naylor
