@pikeplacepublicmarket’s First Annual Día de los Muertos Celebration w/ @diademuertos_pnw by @t_john_caplinger
It started with one photo. The first one in this set. I hadn’t seen Willie in a few months, and I wanted a recent shot of the guy I’ve been talking to since I first took my camera to the streets. A photo memory for my journal I told myself. Then he invited me to his apartment. Downtown Seattle knows Willie as the man feeding pigeons in a custom letterman jacket covered in Seattle sports patches. The Mariners come first, but no team gets left out. He’s made over 200 of them, each one full of memories and moments worth celebrating. Some are dedicated entirely to specific players. “The Kid” certainly deserved his own spread. Willie got a kick out of the fact that Jr’s a photog like me now. Willie had a stroke late last year. He’s talking more and moving around better these days, but he lost most of the use of one arm and can’t roll the jacket racks around his apartment like he used to. Even so, he’s got two new coats in the works and no plans to sell off any pieces of his collection of 1 of 1s. At his place I met Willie Jr., his support pigeon and his partner for movie nights when it rains. For an hour I mostly listened: college days, the harder years selling drugs, jail, and the rebuild into the kind, Seattle-loving, bird-caring soul some of us get to know today. Some of my favorite photos in a long time. Grateful for local legends like Willie, and for the time to hear their stories. by @t_john_caplinger
