I’m a big fan of what I like to call Before and Afters.
Before and Afters are experiences you enter as one person and leave as another.
Sometimes good.
Sometimes bad.
Sometimes both.

I’ve been dreaming about visiting Northern India since I was a teenager.
However, never in my wildest dreams did I imagine my first Himalayan adventure would be with a Paraglider, a tent and a small stash of food on my back.

As I reflect on the people, the flying, the countless serendipitous events and the 12 hours I spent in the custody of very serious men in camo it’s safe to say this one truly qualified as a before and after.

Looking thru the photos and video now I find myself overwhelmed with gratitude for the experiences this life provides and hopeful the universe allows me the opportunity to dive deeper into these mountains and culture Ive grown to love so much.

Its hard to believe today marks ten years since he left this body. It feels like yesterday and a lifetime all at once.
Ten years on and I’ve learned the pain in my heart, that thing they call grief, it never really goes away.
I’ve just learned how to live with it.
Ive learned how to channel it into something good. Something that has made me stronger. Sometbing that has made me better.

Ten years on and I’ve realized I truly am my fathers son.
The receding hairline, the white hairs growing in my beard, his light inside and his darkness. It’s all there in me.
When someone first passes it’s easy to see them thru a rose tinted lens. At some point the lens fades. The bad memories, the flaws and the demons. They become clear too.
I realize now my dad was always at war with himself. I’ve recognized that same war within myself. Ive fought it my whole life too.

Ten years on it’s become clear to me my Dads greatest strength was his enormous capacity for love. He loved so fully and so deeply.
As a boy I don’t think he ever learned how to express or channel that love and as an adult it broke him at one point. I realize now that war and that darkness were simply the sum of him not knowing what to do with all that love and blaming himself when anything goes wrong.
Loving others came easy. Self love was the battlefield.
Over the years I’ve been blessed with the tools and perspective to bring peace to that conflict within myself. I might be the first generation of Murchie to truly do so.
I don’t have kids yet but I imagine that’s all a father could ever hope for a son. To learn from his mistakes, to grow and to be a better human.
