Halloween means “holy evening,” coming from All Hallows’ Eve, the night before the Christian holy day of All Saints’ Day.
Word Origin
• The word is a shortened form of Allhallows Even, meaning the evening before All Hallows’ Day.
• Hallow means a saint or holy person.
• Eve or even means the evening or day before a holiday.
Historical Meanings
• Samhain: The holiday roots go back to an old Celtic pagan festival called Samhain. Celts celebrated it on November 1 to mark the end of the harvest and the start of winter.
• The Spirit World: Ancient people believed the veil between the living and the dead grew thin on this night, allowing spirits to walk the earth. They lit bonfires and wore costumes to hide from or scare away bad spirits.
• Christian Tradition: The church later moved All Saints’ Day to November 1 to honor saints and martyrs, blending older customs into a time to remember the dead.
Modern Meaning
• Today, Halloween is mostly a secular, fun celebration observed on October 31.
• People celebrate by wearing costumes, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, and going trick-or-treating @armabenoit @janetdollarcomedy @mzgradybaby_new_page_ #halloween #costumes #scarymovies #movies taken in LaGrange, Georgia by @t_raysanders
