This is the original first retail configuration using the steel red lock nut… not the cleanest rehaut ring but everything else inverted case wide lume hour hand ,large chamfers, serif round 3 bezel is as it should be . 1971 movement number ..all correct
Interesting note…. Some of this model are using the narrow crown opening original Comex cases, often with the very rare split rehaut ring .

These are from the leftover batch cases, exclusively for Comex repurposed for the first retail

I have shown the difference on a previous blog…. there are a few serious rarities in the PP Family and the narrow opening is certainly one of them by @t_solo_t

Omega - Seamaster 600 « Ploprof - Blue Print - Inverted case stamping » - Mark 1 (B1 Bezel - D1 Dial) - ST 166.077 - Omega 1002

Similar but different…

Maybe one of the first retail Seamaster 600, in one of its most intriguing configurations.

What it shares with a « regular » Mark 1 (B1 bezel / D2 dial):

- B1 bezel: serif « 1 », round-top « 3 », thicker print, triangular 10-minute markers
- Mark 1 case with the U-shaped crown cut-out and steel lock nut
- Cal. 1002: high-beat 28,800 vph, instant date change at midnight
- Plongeur-style hands

What sets it apart:

- D1 dial: not a single print like the D2, but a pre-production « Dial Zero » overprinted to meet the 1971 retail launch. Tell-tale signs: « Professional » and « 600 » sandwiching « Seamaster », squashed lettering, sharp « A » and a dumpy « 600 ». The D2 has a spaced-out « Professional » and a flat-top « A ».
- Blue print: blue lettering, where the D2 shows white text
- Inverted case stamping: the in-pressed inverted marking, a feature associated with the very first cases

A reminder of why originality matters: more than 60% of Seamaster 600s that have gone through Bienne show a movement swap. Every detail counts.

Collectors often ask why I talk about the importance of the stud pusher . Indeed what is the stud pusher…this was the precursor of the under bezel click bearing which after 1969 was a ball bearing but before was this spring loaded stud by @t_solo_t

Old school watch makers called them pink movements ..in fact the Omega watch company delineated their products with a beryllium copper coating ..more expensive but superb protection from corrosion …however in the course of creating prototypes not all parts were treated as such so modifications to the barrel bridge for example would use lemania stocked, none coated parts .

If your movement has something like this its most definitely prototype and comes directly from the prototype and testing department of Omega ,the biggest unit of its kind in Switzerland by @t_solo_t

Watches exported to the United States of America became subject to various taxations the most common one , even for steel Watches was related to the number of jewels in the movement I have reproduced a precis as follows…
The legislation was the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act of 1930, officially the Tariff Act of 1930.
The relevant provision was Paragraph 367(a)(6), which levied a special import duty on watch movements containing more than 17 jewels.
This imposed a flat duty of $10.75 per movement !
Effective date: 18 June 1930.
This was a substantial sum of money and so Omega set about creating degraded movements for export. This photo is an excellent example of an American Ploprof with its correct original rotor and it’s hacking facility and quick date set on a 1000 calibre with 17 jewels by @t_solo_t

Excuse the fluff on the lens, but this is something a little bit special, this has been provided by a fellow collector and a fan of the mega quartz.
It is a hitherto unknown dial which is unquestionably a prototype and most probably preproduction
As collectors of the iteration will know every electronic Watch has a red trapezoid with the Omega at the 12 o’clock position. This one has a gold Omega above the word constellation but in every other respect is identical.
This was in fact a mythical dial as rumours of its existence has been going around for more than 40 years.
It has a parts serial number on the back along with the logo for the star watch company of Michigan . At some point in the future it will be fitted to a gold mega quartz to establish that it has the correct dimensions….. it’s a rare thing by @t_solo_t

It’s worth looking closely when viewing a watch because the small details reveal large clues…..look at the touching no gap ‘lume to date window’ on the left compared with the gap ‘lume to date window’ on the right ….left is service dial …right is original…. Also the rectilinear zeroes on the right display the font difference .

For the record these are in the 33 million movement range [feet and metres ] which starts in mid 1974 and runs to 1982 …the biggest cohort by far by @t_solo_t
