POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
We spent the last few days in Sonora, Mexico chasing Desert Bighorn Sheep through the mountains. It was an unbelievable experience getting to see the terrain where these sheep live and the overall number of sheep on this ranch.

We spent countless hours glassing through dozens of rams. On Tuesday, we found a band of 3 mature sheep that we wanted to go after. After watching them bed down on Tuesday night, we made a plan to come back to that mountain first thing Wednesday morning to try to relocate them. On Wednesday, the guides found them within minutes of first light, and we made our plan to get closer. With the help of @ivanfloresl and his team, we used the terrain and a perfect wind to stalk up within 50 yards of the rams. We were able to get set up for the shot, and I was waiting for the biggest and most mature ram to get clear. We were waiting for him to clear for 10 minutes as they fed within 50 yards. Before that happened, the sheep saw something that they didn’t like and started to spook up the mountain. I didn’t have a shot opportunity in the direction that they were headed, so I jumped up and used the ridge between us to quickly move 20 yards to our right so that I could see them. With our guide right behind me, I dropped down to my stomach and we quickly picked the sheep that we were after out of the moving group. I had one window to shoot and made a 75 yard shot on this ram. He made it 20 yards before tipping over. It was an amazing trip that ended with me harvesting my first sheep. I can’t thank Ivan, @mexcan_outfitters , and @craveofthehunt enough for helping us to make this once in a lifetime trip a success!

It all came together this morning in New Mexico! After 3 hard days of hunting, we moved in on this bull today, and I made a 250 yard shot that put him down. Shoutout to Black Mountain Outfitters for putting us elk! taken in New Mexico by @t_watts13

Part 2 of the Western turkey trip took us to Montana. I don’t think there is any way to make this story shorter. On day 2, we were able to catch up with 2 more Merriam’s, and I took the prettiest turkey I’ve ever seen. He had a snow white fan, and he came in gobbling and strutting around the bowl of a Montana mountain.

Day 3 is when it all fell apart. We drove a few hours to a new area where there isn’t a paved road for 100+ miles to try to find a few more birds to hunt. We saw lots of antelope, elk, and deer, but no turkey. We headed back to the Airbnb. Right at dark (8pm), we blew a tire 20+ miles from the nearest house. We changed it to the spare, and took off. A mile down the road, we blew another tire on the opposite side of the car. We had no signal, so we tried to make it to the top of the hill. We came to a stop as the tire went flat, and we got 1 bar of cell service. We called the rental agency, tow companies, and the county sheriff. The tow truck couldn’t come until the next morning, and the nearest deputy was 2 hours away. We got comfortable because we might be sleeping in the car overnight. Dispatch called back and said they’re sending a sheriff. He got there at midnight, and we rode in the sheriff car to the nearest gas station in Wyoming (an hour away on more dirt roads). After the sheriff dropped us off at 1am, we sat outside the gas station with our shotguns on a bench until a local taxi took us to our Airbnb. The next morning, we took another taxi to the nearest airport 30 minutes away, rented another car, and drove 1.5 hours to meet the tow truck at the car because we had the keys. We got the car towed and went back to the airport because we had to change out cars from the second one that we rented. After swapping out, we hung up the hunting and drove the paved roads through the national forest to see the snow capped mountains and elk herds. The moral of this story is to make sure you have enough spares.

Part 1 of our Western turkey trip. I knocked out the third leg of my grand slam with a Wyoming Merriam’s. This was one of the prettiest places I’ve ever been.

More archives from our New Brunswick moose hunt. It consisted of missed flights, naps in the woods, and a successful week chasing rutting bulls. What a start to the 2025 hunting season!
