What a joy to design for our village! Since the day it opened, we’ve been living at (and for!) Tabeeb Coffee Roasters, the new Printer’s Row cafe founded by our beloveds @teehani and Mohammed. Tabeeb means doctor, or healer, in Arabic—a fitting name for a business built by a surgeon and a social worker who believe coffee is medicine. To celebrate and support their new labor of love, we created a warm, earthy visual identity that reflects the couple’s Palestinian and Syrian heritage of hospitality, craft, and culture. The wordmark is typeset in Dahlia by husband-and-wife foundry Vj-type, with ornamental letterforms reflecting the smooth, organic shape of the Palestinian jarrah. The desert-inspired palette integrates coffee, cherry, and sand hues, with archival imagery woven in to help root the space in craft and ritual. Three years ago, we planted this little coffee tree with no expectations, just curiosity. In a Chicago home, that’s already a bit unusual. It finally blossomed this summer, and after months of watching green cherries that seemed content to stay green forever, the first hints of red finally appeared this week. We still don’t know the varietal or what it’ll taste like, but with a little more patience, we’ll harvest, process, roast, and hopefully brew enough for a single cup (maybe two).
