For Murakami, violence, nostalgia, gender, and memory collide again and again. "Popular Hits of the Showa Era" is a violent, delicate, and often darkly humorous conversation of opposites: male versus female, old versus new, tradition versus change, city versus countryside - and, perhaps most centrally, peace versus war, and what is left in between when all is over. In my latest review for @thejapansociety, I discuss "Popular Hits of the Showa Era" (1994), an absurdist novel that examines post-war identity, generational fractures, and a darker side of Japanese culture you may know from Murakami's other works - notably the literary basis for cult horror film "Audition" (1999). My new essay, „Print Club Girls,“ is now live on the wonderful @tokyotheque. This piece explores the history of Japan’s photo booths, tracing aesthetic lineage from „oshiroi“ (traditional white face powder) to the „dekame“ (big eyes) phenomenon still a part of contemporary culture today. It examines purikura, my love at 16, not as a nostalgic relic, but as a complex site where commercial beauty standards and female agency can collide. I question whether the act of taking a highly filtered and customised image can function as an act of empowering self-documentation, occupying the space between traditional self-portraiture and the modern selfie.
