Her husband, who had been a bricklayer, was beginning to die. She sat next to him worried about his symptoms. Wringing her hands, their dog sat by their feet as a reassuring presence. They had been married many years, she was sad at the prospect of her husband dying. taken in The Handbag Factory by @tabitharpowles

These drawings were done from memory. Interactions I had while working as a community palliative care nurse.

This is a drawing of a man who was with his wife, sat next to him and their prized possession, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Which I have a soft spot for.

His family were worried for him, in pain and beginning to deteriorate, he was showing signs that indicated the early stages of dying. While visiting him and trying to make him more comfortable, he told me about his life as a young man. Working in the area, a few decades ago, as a bricklayer, he told me he had helped build a lot of the homes.

He wanted to be made comfortable and to stay in his chair.

Part of my 'dressing gown series', here is a drawing that I've developed into a paiting that will be shown at the @aschandbagfactory 2nd June to the 8th June.

This is part of a collection of drawings that I had done while working as a palliative care nurse.

This image is of a man who I had visited at home. He was unable to sit comfortably due to the cancer he was living with. Now alone and isolated, having become estranged from his family. The flat was virtually empty, just a bed and a few items of clothing, including his hat. What mattered to him was the daily routine of feeding the fox that would visit him.

I draw from memory. What have I remembered, it's an amalgamation of things, an object, the atmosphere, a posture.

I am excited to be showing new work in this exhibition 'Secrets'. The PV is 4th June between 6-8pm. Please come along, details on the flyer.

Tabitha's work is rooted in the human body, the intimacy and vulnerability. Drawing on her experience as an HIV nurse, palliative care nurse, soul midwife, and mother, she returns again to the same territories: attitudes towards women, motherhood, death, dying, and grief. These are not distant themes. They are drawn from the texture of her own life and from the lives of people she has sat with at their most exposed.
She works expressively and intuitively, painting and drawing as a way of figuring something out, repeating images, following gut instinct, letting meaning surface through the making.
Tabitha is interested in what people remember. A moment shared with another person, what the mind takes away, what it decides to keep, how memory distorts accuracy. Her drawings and paintings are an amalgamation: an object, a posture, an atmosphere, all in which build a scene. The drawing or painting is an attempt to recreate the moment.
This current series focuses on grief and mortality. The paintings are acts of witness, drawn from her memory of individuals she encountered as a community palliative care nurse. taken in The Handbag Factory by @tabitharpowles

This is a linoprint of an image I had drawn of a gentleman dying on a Covid Ward when I was redeployed as a nurse in 2021.
Sadly he died without his wife or family because of the restrictions that were in place at the time. taken in Rabbet Art Services by @tabitharpowles
