I’m so thankful to be a small part of the 💪@designingmotherhood team. I admire these individuals so much as artists, as curators, as thinkers, as feminists and as human beings. And the press is nice too - yesterday's coverage from the Boston Globe (🔥 @cate.mcquaid ) gave the show a lovely and thoughtful review. The exhibit @maamboston also got great coverage from local radio stations -- @WGBH and @WBUR -- and local news outlets too. Juliana, Zoe, Amber, Gabriella, Michelle and all the artists with whom I’m sharing walls are very special to me. Every once in a while, you meet your people in the art world. These are mine. A huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this happen. #blessed

As summer winds down, we've been captivated by a newly arrived piece from @tabithasoren's latest series, "Lightness of Being".

Soren begins by photographing in the field with an 8x10 camera and available light. She then layers acrylic, varnish, or oil onto the print to draw out hidden dimensions, and rephotographs the altered image using extended exposures and handmade lighting — using light itself as both subject and tool to explore the gap between what we see and what exists.

Digital life is a menace - except when it's not. While traveling far from Edinburgh, I was able to virtually attend the opening talk for "Gwen John: Strange Beauties" at the National Galleries of Scotland.

@MuseumWales curator Lucy Wood gave the fabulous lecture sharing what continues to make Gwen John’s work so extraordinary - from the strength and tenderness of her portraits to the subtle yet technical beauty that rewards those who spend time looking closely. This is not shouty work. Gwen John is a poet of stillness.

Along with Wood, National Galleries of Scotland curator Charlotte Topsfield created the first major retrospective in over 40 years dedicated to one of Wales’ most accomplished artists - and to my north star artist.

I've been studying Gwen John's work since I was a fellow at #Stanford in the late 90s. But I had never seen her notes, diaries and this carte de visite (slide 1).

Born in 1876, Gwen John studied at the Slade School of Art in London, becoming one of the first generation of women to receive a formal art education, before settling in Paris. Marking 150 years since her birth, Strange Beauties offers a fresh perspective on John’s work and artistic legacy. Rarely seen drawings and watercolors on display give an insight into her determined artistic vision.

How I wish I could see the exhibition! It includes 200 paintings, drawings and archival works of an artist whose quiet, deeply personal approach changed the course of modern art.

Carrie Schneider transforms a fleeting moment from a Chris Marker film into a monumental installation at the 2026 Venice Biennale. She made the world's largest photograph and I don't care HOW. It's magic. 💫

Tile museum, Palermo - recommended! Grazie a @giuliaceirano, @moraime @elena_modalitademode

The owner began collecting tiles when he was 11 years old. What started as a childhood passion grew into a lifelong obsession, eventually filling an entire historic palazzo with one of the most extraordinary collections of Sicilian and Italian ceramics in the world.

But this isn’t just a museum. It’s also his home. He lives here with his photogenic cats, surrounded by the collection he has spent decades building and preserving.

I’m getting closer to realizing my dream of going to India by giving a virtual talk for the Mumbai-based Sister Library. Their annual art school intensive this year is on photography. Run entirely by women for women, its core mission is to make diverse artistic practices accessible and provide a safe space for creative experimentation, mentorship, and collaboration. I’m so honored to be included in the group of female photographers invited to speak.

This is Sister Library’s big fundraiser. If you want to join us and you’re on PST, my talk will actually happen August 15th because of the crazy time zone difference ⏰. If you want to make a donation because women’s spaces matter to you, it doesn’t matter which time zone you’re on. THE GOOD KARMA WILL REACH YOU NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE. 💫

EMAIL SISTERLIBRARYSCHOOL@GMAIL.COM to donate or participate.

MORE INFO:
To keep education equitable, Monsoon school operates on a community-first sliding scale. Higher tier registrations directly fund reserved seats for women coming from low-income backgrounds. All the money raised goes to supporting Sister Library, South Asia’s first community-owned, community-run feminist library and traveling art installation. Located in the Bandra West neighborhood of Mumbai, which houses over 1,000 literary works exclusively by women. This includes around 700 handmade zines, graphic novels, poetry, classic fiction, and non-fiction. ISN’T THAT AMAZING?

The intensive program this year is about photography and lens-based practices- but the medium changes each year. Participants experiment with cameras, critique each other's visual work, and explore visual storytelling. The program traditionally culminates in a public gallery exhibition in Bombay (Mumbai) to showcase the participants' finished artwork. taken in Virtual_talk_ by @tabithasoren
