An unsuitable secondary filter, may cause excessive restriction or and can cause fuel starvation, air leaks, loss of power and stalling. Correct flow capacity, micron rating and installation position all matter.

💧 Know how to drain your water separator. With the engine off, follow the manufacturer’s procedure: place a suitable container beneath the drain, carefully open it and drain collected water and sediment until clean diesel appears. Close the drain securely, prime or bleed the system as specified, then check for leaks. Dispose of contaminated fuel responsibly. Draining the bowl won’t restore a blocked filter element.

🔧 Heading remote? Consider carrying spare filters that meet OEM requirements, along with the correct seals, tools and replacement instructions.

If a water warning remains on or contamination keeps returning, investigate the cause before continuing. This may mean getting the vehicle towed before damage occurs.

A spare filter won’t fix a tank full of contaminated fuel.

Sometimes an obstacle will expose the limits of your vehicle’s approach, breakover or departure angles. Changing your line and negotiating it diagonally sometimes at an angle of up to 45 degrees may help you work within those limits.

Many people immediately look to modifications for a solution. Raising ride height can improve clearance and obstacle angles, but it also raises the centre of gravity, adversely affecting handling and stability and capability.

Even in off-road motorsport, ride height is a compromise. Competitors balance clearance and suspension travel against the handling benefits of keeping the vehicle’s centre of gravity low.

Learn your vehicle, develop your skills and make the most of the equipment you already have. When you understand its limitations, you can make an informed decision about what actually needs modifying, if it needs modification at all.

Throwing mods and money at vehicle often has more adverse effects, especially when not thought through.

Skills fade, practices evolve and doctrine changes. Regular skills enhancement training and professional development help maintain confidence, competence and sound judgement. For trainers, keeping up to date with current techniques, industry developments and the latest doctrine ensures what we teach remains relevant, effective and grounded in current practice. Experience matters—but we still need to keep learning, challenge our habits and sharpen our skills. Not actively seeking to improve, or expand knowledge and skills is a recipe for incompetence
regardless of the industry you’re in.

Operating your four-wheel-drive in 4x4, isn’t just for slow tracks. On loose, unsealed roads at higher touring speeds, driving both axles can improve traction and stability, helping reduce the rear end stepping sideways over corrugations and rough patches. It does this by inducing a mild understeer tendency, helping the vehicle feel more settled. Both part-time and full-time 4WD systems offer advantages when used correctly. Selecting 4H may slightly increase fuel consumption, but the difference can be small the stability benefit is worth it.

For a full-time system, lock your centre differential.

For a part-time system, select four-wheel-drive high range.

This is for use on low traction surfaces only such as unsealed roads.

Your trauma kit is no good if you can’t get to it when it matters. Buried under camping gear, locked in a toolbox or left in another vehicle, it’s unavailable when someone needs immediate first aid. Keep it clearly marked, readily accessible and make sure everyone knows where it is—and how to use it. TAC-OFFROAD delivers Advanced First Aid training that teaches practical use of immediate first aid and trauma kits, giving you the skills and confidence to act.

With only two participants today, we got through the required training and assessments early, leaving time for a bit extra.

“You fellas want to get into a bit more?”

“Are you kidding? This is mad!”

So these two legends spent the arvo building on their skills with a bit of extracurricular training.

Some might call it fun. We’ll call it professional development.

Oh
did I mention this is nationally recognised training

After a suspected snake or funnel-web spider bite, keeping the person and bitten limb still is critical. Venom typically moves from the bite site through the lymphatic system before entering the bloodstream. Muscle and skeletal movement increases lymph flow through a series of valves and will speed up venom spread. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage, splint the limb and keep the person lying still. Call 000 and don’t let them walk even if they feel well. These measures help slow venom spread while awaiting emergency treatment.

When no first aid equipment is available, prioritising the restriction of skeletal movement is critical to mitigate the risk of venom moving through the body.
