It’s been another school year of growth and African arts with @boysgirlsclubofseva and @bfw_cisofhr! They’ve learned so much and learned to support one another, easily stepping in to take on an absent child’s role during their final performances, and cheering each other on.

They spent October through May learning about Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa, learning some Yoruba, Zulu, Twi, and important life lessons along the way. Then they put it all together with some props and costumes in a special presentation for their peers and families, captured here by @mrdearshotme.

Special thanks to @cityofvabeach Cultural Affairs, @hamptonroadscf, and @virginiaarts for helping to make these programs possible; and to all our volunteers and Board members for making Tuesday night’s performance possible!

@taca757’s educational programs began 6.5 years ago with Facebook lives to engage families stuck at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. We were in schools and libraries in Alexandria, Newport News, Norfolk, and VA Beach last school year, and are thrilled to be adding Chesapeake this year! 🤩

Special thanks to our small but mighty team of instructors, @olddominionu’s Ed grad students, and our supporters for making this possible! 🙏🏾

Talented singer, actress, and composer Tsidii Le Loka took her talents from Lesotho to the bright lights of Broadway. Before Broadway, Tsidii made her mark as a vocalist in South Africa, performing internationally and collaborating with legendary artists including Sting, Elton John, Madonna, Harry Belafonte, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Her breakthrough came when director Julie Taymor cast her as Rafiki in the Broadway musical The Lion King. Tsidii didn’t just portray the character; she also composed “Rafiki Mourns,” contributing creatively to the production.

Her acclaimed performance earned her Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards, as well as a Tony Award nomination. She also made history as the only lead performer in the original Broadway cast born in Africa.

Born in Mahalapye, Botswana, Montsho became a powerhouse in the 400 metres, winning gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Botswana’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal.

But she didn’t stop there! She became a two-time African champion in the 400m and represented Botswana at multiple Olympic Games, earning a reputation for her explosive finishing speed and consistency on the international stage.

Beyond the medals, Montsho’s career helped inspire a new generation of Botswana athletes, particularly young girls who could now see themselves competing and succeeding at the highest levels.
