A 2019 study found that areas of the Amazon with significant deforestation saw many more cases of malaria. Using trends in deforestation and data on malaria rates, the same study estimated that a 10% increase in deforestation leads to a 3.3% increase in malaria incidence in Brazil. In some Brazilian municipalities, the incidence of malaria is even greater. For example, in Mancio Lima, Brazil, a 4.3% increase in deforestation is associated with a 48% increased in malaria incidence. #pic #pictureoftheday #earth #life by @tad_smitty
More than a third of the Earth’s land is used for agricultural purposes, and humans’ desire for beef, soy, palm oil, and wood products destroy tropical forests at staggering rates each year. In South America specifically, beef and soy production drive more than two-thirds of the habitat loss with around 75% of soy production becoming livestock feed. Deforestation also occurs at alarming rates in Southeast Asia and the Congo Basin, the world’s second-largest rain forest. #deforestation #earth #pictureoftheday #pic by @tad_smitty
How #Deforestation Leads to the Spread of Deadly Viruses from Animals to Humans By: @onegreenplanet A growing body of evidence shows that deforestation can greatly increase the prevalence of zoonotic viruses in which viruses are passed from animals to humans. Six out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are zoonotic. In an uninterrupted environment, viruses carried by animals are limited by their #ecosystems . @luisdelrio @pexels @onepeloton by @tad_smitty

The government-financed, privately owned and operated astronaut ferry ships will enable NASA to expand the space station's crew to seven, including four full-time NASA and partner agency astronauts, maximizing the amount of research that can be carried out in the $100 billion lab complex. by @tad_smitty

The mission, known as Demonstration Test Flight No. 2 — Demo 2 — will mark the second launch of a SpaceX Crew Dragon and the first with astronauts on board. If no major problems are found, the agency is expected to certify the spacecraft for operational space station crew rotation missions, clearing the way for launch of a three-man, one-woman crew this fall. by @tad_smitty
"But now in this new era, NASA, especially in low-Earth orbit, has an ability to be a customer, one customer of many customers in a very robust commercial marketplace. ... We want to have numerous providers that are competing against each other on cost and innovation. And that's really what we are entering into with this new era of human spaceflight." Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and agency-wide workforce restrictions, Crew Dragon commander Douglas Hurley, the pilot of the final shuttle mission in July 2011, and crewmate Robert Behnken flew to the Kennedy Space Center this past Wednesday to begin final preparations. by @tad_smitty
