A huge thank you to @joanne_yeadon @bernatklein Foundation for a wonderful workshop with our first-year students on the BA (Hons) Textile Art, Design and Fashion course @tadf_insta @belfastschoolofart .

We explored how Bernat Klein approached yarn in a painterly way, using space-dyed ombrés to create beautiful, expressive colour that translated into extraordinary weaves, knits and prints.

Klein’s innovative approach to colour, texture and material continues to inspire. His archive provided a fantastic starting point for our students to explore his legacy, experiment with their own ideas and work collaboratively to develop exciting creative responses.

✨ Coming up: The Bernat Klein Symposium – 28th November funded by our wonderful Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) @futureislandisland
We are delighted to be hosting the Bernat Klein Symposium on 28 November, alongside an exhibition showcasing some of Klein’s work. It promises to be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate his extraordinary contribution to textiles.

Very proud to have been invited to see the work of @ulsteruni @belfastschoolofart BA (Hons)Textile Art, Design and Fashion @tadf_insta graduate and Graduate in Residence, Rachel McComb, @rachel_lucretia_ completed “The CHANEL, le19M and The King’s Foundation Métiers d’art Atelier Fellowship” last night at the Garrison Chapel in London! The exhibition is open to the public from today so if you are in London drop in to see the amazing work of the students in fashion, embroidery and millinery!

CONGRATULATIONS to @belfastschoolofart @tadf_insta graduate Deirdre Nic Ainmhire who was announced as the 2026 recipient of the LILLA SPEIRS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN EMBROIDERY!

Lilla Speirs was a driving force behind the embroidery course at Ulster University in Belfast and generously funded an award to recognise outstanding achievement in the field.

The Lilla Speirs Award for Excellence in Embroidered Textile Art (also known as the Lilla Speirs Award for Embroidered Textiles) is presented annually at the @ulsteruni @belfastschoolofart Degree Show. It honors a student whose embroidered textile work stands out for its craftsmanship, innovation, and artistic expression

We are delighted to announce that Kerry Burns @cullentraghtextiles, BA (Hons) Textile Art, Design and Fashion, is the winner of our 2026 Prize at Belfast School of Art @tadf_insta @belfastschoolofart.

Kerry's graduate collection Lissummon consists of blankets and cushions that reflect the landscape and scenery of the townland of Lissummon, a small rural community in South Armagh where she grew up. She focused on the memories embedded in the landscape and the history of the weavers whose houses still stand today, remnants of a craft tradition that shaped the area. Kerry chose to use all Irish wool, an underused product which is also sustainable and durable. Functionally is central to her work; she only wants to create textiles with purpose, cushions and blankets made to be used for decades.

Kerry said:
'It is a great honour to have been awarded the Robin and Lucienne Day Foundation Prize for textile design. The award will really be a big push in the right direction to begin producing new designs and building my weaving experience'.

The award was adjudicated by our Honorary Trustee Mary V. Mullin with Lucy Smyth and Anna Duffy (tutors at Belfast School of Art) and Julie Hall (Head of Design at Bedeck).

Our TADF course offers students the opportunity to specialise in one of three pathways: Textile Art, Textile Design, or Fashion, while developing expertise across our five disciplines: Embroidery, Garment Construction, Knit, Print, and Weave.

Throughout their studies, our graduates have explored creative ideas, mastered traditional and contemporary techniques, using industry-standard facilities to develop distinctive personal practices and professional collections.
